Objectives
By the end of this unit, the learner
should be able to:
Outline the aims and principles of first
aid.
Discuss bandaging and splinting.
Discuss the methods of lifting and
transportation of casualties. 
Definition
First aid is the immediate care given
to a person who has been involved or
has been suddenly taken ill, before full
technical help arrives or before
reaching a health facility
Aims of first aid
To preserve life.
Minimise the effects of injury.
To promote recovery.
To relieve pain and distress
To prevent the condition from worsening.
Deliver live casualty in good condition to
hospital.
Principles of first aid

To treat the most urgent condition e.g.


severe haemorrhage, shock or impaired
breathing;
Remove the patient from danger or
remove further danger from the
casualty.

For Example: a child who is caught
up in a fire should be removed
immediately and taken to a safer place
before any treatment.
Assess the level of consciousness in a
patient who is unconscious and don’t
give anything by mouth.

Call for help and arrange for transport.
Handle patient with care and if there
is a suspected fracture, support the part
involved carefully.
Use your common sense.
Control people standing by.

Avoid cross infection by covering cuts
on your hands with waterproof
dressing, wear disposable gloves if
available.
Don’t attempt too much alone.
Control your feelings and know your
limits.

Make a call to inform the necessary
authorities.
Set priorities in the casualties – severe,
moderate, milderate.
