Kabuki Theater

• Kabuki is one of the traditions that is very


popular until today.
• It is the traditional form of theater which
began at the end of the 16th century.
• Became the most successful theater in the
red districts of the great cities.
• Considered also the most important
Japanese contribution to the world
Theater.

1.Ipponchoshi
• Or the continuous pattern
• Used in speeches building up to an
explosive climax in the
aragoto(Oversized, super natural,
rough hero) style
• Requires extraordinary breath control
that only few experts succeed in
achieving

2. Nori
• Adopted from chanting or Jojuri ( a
traditional Japanese narrative music
in wich a TAYU sings to
accompaniment of a SHAMISEN.
• Implies a very sensitive capacity of
riding the rhythms of the shamisen
(string instrument) Declaiming each
accompaniment.

3. Yakuharai
• The subtle delivery of
poetical text written in
the Japanese metrical
form of alternating seven
and five syllables.

1.GAGAKU- Classic court music imported from
China during 18th century
2.KAGURA- Performed in Shinto Shrines
3.NO- Chant derived from shomyo, the
sophisticated and rich tradition of Bhuddist
chanting.
4.Nagauta- Is a love song wich reached a
golden age in the first half of the 19 century
as DANCE MUSIC the henge mono(quick
change piece)
Divide the class into three and let the
class watch a video clip of Kabuki
performance and discuss their
observations. After the discussions of
each group, they will share their
observations.
Group 1- Observe the costumes of the
characters in the theater play.
 
Group 2- Observe the different musical
instrument used in the theater play.
 
Group 3- Observe the techniques used by the
characters in performing Kabuki.
Watch the video clip of Kabuki
Theater and observe the musical
background. Then, in your original
group, make your own improvise
rhythmic pattern by tapping your
body, chairs or using sticks.
