AXIAL SKELETAL SYSTEM

GROUP 3
WHAT IS AXIAL SKELETON?
• The human skeleton has a total of 206 bones and axial
skeleton consist up to 80 of that bones which included the
bones in the skull, ossicles of the middle ear, hyoid bone,
vertebral column, and the thoracic cage.

It also provides protection and support for the brain, spinal

cord, and vital organs.
SKULL

• Your skull provides structure to your head and face while

also protecting your brain. The bones in your skull can be
divided into the cranial bones, which form your cranium,
and facial bones, which make up your face.
• CRANIAL BONES • FACIAL BONES
- Parietal - Zygomatic bone
- Temporal - Lacrimal bone
- Frontal - Inferior nasal conchae
- Occipital - Nasal bone
- Ethmoid - Platine
- Sphenoid - Maxilla
- vomer
- Mandible
AUDITORY OSSICLES

• Malleus, Incus, Stapes.

- the small bones of the middle ear; they are articulated

to form a chain for the transmission of sound from the
tympanic membrane to the oval window.
HYOID

• The hyoid bone is a small horseshoe-shaped bone

located in the front of your neck. It sits between the
chin and the thyroid cartilage and is instrumental in
the function of swallowing and tongue movements.
VERTEBRAL COLUMN

• The vertebral column (spine or backbone) is a curved

structure composed of bony vertebrae that are
interconnected by cartilaginous intervertebral discs. It is
part of the axial skeleton and extends from the base of the
skull to the tip of the coccyx. The spinal cord runs through
its center. The vertebral column is divided into five regions
and consists of 33 vertebrae interlaced by strong joints and
ligaments.
• Vertebral Column

- Cervical Vertebrae
- Thoracic Vertebrae
- Lumbar Vertebrae
- Sacrum
- coccyx
THORACIC CAGE

• The thoracic cage, also known as the rib cage, is the

osteocartilaginous structure that encloses the thorax.
It is formed by the 12 thoracic vertebrae, 12 pairs of
ribs and associated costal cartilages and the sternum.
- RIBS( TRUE RIBS, FALSE RIBS, FLOATING RIBS
- STERNUM
- THORACIC VERTEBRAE
- COSTAL CARTILAGE
