What do lipids do?

• The main biological functions

of lipids include storing
energy
• Lipids also form the structural
components of cell
membranes
• Form various messengers and
signaling molecules within
the body
Where are lipids
found?
Lipids are found in many parts of the human
body like:
• Cell membranes
•  Cholesterol
•  Blood cells
•  The brain
Which part of the lipid is hydrophobic?

• The Tail
• The "tail" of the molecule
is made up of two fatty acids,
which are hydrophobic and
do not dissolve in water
Which part of the
lipid is insoluble?
•  Lipids are non-polar molecules
while water is polar molecule
•  There is no way for water to
attach to a lipid molecule
•  Instead, the non-polar lipids will
bind to themselves
•  which is why oils and fats form
droplets on the surface of water.
Which part of the lipid is hydrophilic?

• The head
• Which contains a negatively
charged phosphate group as
well as an additional small
group
• which may also or be charged
or polar
Examples of lipids?
• Fats
• Oils
• Waxes
• Steroids
• Hormones
Which part of the lipid is polar
and Non polar?

Polar: Non Polar:

• The heads (phospho part) • fatty molecules
• Amphiphilic molecules with • Tails
a hydrophobic tail  •  The charge distribution is
• A hydrophilic head group evenly distributed
•  The molecules do not
have positive and negatively
charged ends
What are waxes?

• Waxes are a form of lipid

consisting of long-chain alcohols
• The properties of the wax
depend on the groups that are
attached to the long carbon tails
• Waxes are produced by many
plants and animals
• They are mainly used as a strong
barrier that repels water
and bacteria
What are oils and
fats?
• Fats and oils are the most
abundant lipids in nature
• They provide energy for living
organisms
•  insulate body organs
•  Transport fat-soluble vitamins
through the blood
What is insulation?

• Insulation is the material

which covers a substance and
stops the flow of heat out of
it
• They help keep aquatic birds
and mammals dry because of
their water-repelling nature
