Q4 WEEK 3

MATHEMATIC
S
Volume of a Cube and a
Rectangular Prism
Using Cu. Cm and Cu.
M.
In your previous lesson, you have
learned to visualize the volume of
a cube and a rectangular prism
as well as the use of formula
during the application.
In this lesson you were able to
visualize the process of finding
the volume. and derive the
formula in solving mathematical
problems and real-life situations.
As a learner you are expected to:
a. Finds the volume of a cube and a
rectangular prism using cu. cm and
cu. m.
b. Estimates and uses appropriate
units of measure for volume.
Let us have a review of the past lesson:
Look at the figure:
How many cubic centimeters are there in
the first layer?
1. How many layers of cubic centimeters
will it take to fill the box?
2. What is the total cubic centimeters are
needed to fill the box?
3. Therefore, what is your understanding
about the volume of the box?
Volume of a Rectangular Prism and a
Cube

Volume (V) is the number of cubic units

needed to fill the spatial figure. It is the
amount that will occupy space of the
figure.
Volume is three-dimensional (3D) process
of measuring the spatial figure. It is
composed of the area of the base (length x
width) times the height or V= lwh. That is
why every answer is in cubic units (in³,
cm³, m³, etc.)
A cube is an example of a spatial figure that
has three dimensions. Since all the faces of
the cube are perfect squares, the length, the
width, and the height are equal. The sides of
the square are also called edges of the cube
and s is the symbol used. Thus, the formula to
find the volume of the cube is s x s x s or s³.
S= 3 cm
V= 3 cm x 3 cm x 3 cm = 27
cm³
27 cm³ is read as “27 cubic
centimeters”.
We know that for a rectangular
prism, the base is always a rectangle.
Therefore, the area of the base is
always the product of length and
width. To get the volume, we just
multiply the area by the height.
Volume of rectangular
prism= area of rectangle x
height of the prism or
simply,
V= l x w x h
V = 5 cm x 3 cm x 4 cm
V= 60 cm³
Read and study the problem below. A
storage box is 60 cm by 40 cm by 30 cm.
What is the volume of the box? The
volume of a rectangular prism is equal to
the product of its length, width, and
height.
V= l x w x h
= 60 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm
= 72 000 cm³
Study the figure below and analyze the
given unit of measure to find its volume.
The solid figure in numbers 1 and 2 are both
rectangular prisms. The third figure is also a
prism but since the length, width and height
are all the same, it has a special name. It is
called a cube. If the length, width and height
are equal, we can substitute s for length,
width and height and form a special formula
for finding the volume.
Estimating and Using Appropriate Units of
Measure for Volume

Read and study the problem.

Elijah has a rectangular box with sand inside
it. He wants to know the capacity of the box,
what shall he do? What unit of measure will
he use?
The unit of measurement your will
use depends on the size of the object
you will measure. For tiny objects, it
is better to use mm³, for small ones
we use cm³ or dm³, and for big
objects, we use m³.
Write the best unit of measure to
find the volume of the following:
(mm3, cm3, dm3, m3)
1. water in a rectangular pool
2. an ice before it melts
3. a dice
4. a blackboard eraser
5. oil in a rectangular box
