CRITICAL EVENTS AND THEIR IMPACTS

JAPANESE OCCUPATION OF THE PHILIPPINES WAS

OPPOSED BY ACTIVE AND SUCCESSFUL
UNDERGROUND AND GUERRILLA ACTIVITY
The Philippine guerrilla movement continued to grow, in
spite of Japanese campaigns against them. Throughout
Luzon and the southern islands, Filipinos joined various
groups and vowed to fight the Japanese.

Although, these revolts/resistance against Japan is

over, political movements like this are still evident in
our certain era right now, and it is safe to say, that the
fight for justice is not yet over.

COMFORT WOMEN
Throughout the Philippines more than a thousand
women, some being under the age of 18, were
imprisoned as “comfort women”, kept in sexual
slavery for Japanese military personnel during the
occupation.

It has turned into an issue of national significance

which concerns the entire Filipino people, whose
tendency to be forgetful could undermine the
comfort women’s call for justice, and threaten to
erase from the collective memory this tragic part
of our history.

GEN. DOUGLAS MACARTHUR RETURNS

The iconic phrase, “I shall return” by Gen. Douglas
McArthur gave the Filipinos a sense of hope, it seemed
like a rope that the 90,000 American and Filipino troops
(who were left in Corregidor and Bataan Peninsula)
were holding on to.

On October 20, 1944, a few hours after his troops

landed, MacArthur waded ashore onto the Philippine
island of Leyte. That day, he made a radio broadcast in
which he declared, “People of the Philippines, I have
returned!” It took him a little while but nevertheless, his
anticipated return was still historic.
