The total goat production from April to June 2020 was estimated at
14.20 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This was 19.3 percent lower
than the output in the same quarter of 2019 of 17.59 thousand metric
tons, liveweight.

Central Visayas was the top producer of goat during the quarter with
2.14 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This was followed by Northern
Mindanao and Ilocos Region with corresponding productions of
1.79 thousand metric tons, liveweight, and 1.70 thousand metric tons,
liveweight. These three regions accounted for 39.6 percent of the
country’s total goat production.

During the quarter, 14 regions recorded decreases in production relative

to their levels in the same period a year ago. Ilocos Region had the
highest annual decrease of 47.3 percent as it exhibited an output of
1.70 thousand metric tons, liveweight, this quarter from 3.22 thousand

As of 01 July 2020, the total goat inventory in the country was estimated
at 3.99 million heads, an increase of 4.2 percent from the 3.83 million
heads recorded in the same period of 2019. Of the total goat population,
almost all (98.7%) were raised in backyard farms while the remaining
(1.3%) were from commercial farms.

The top three regions, in terms of inventory, were Central Visayas,

Western Visayas, and Ilocos Region. These regions accounted for
40.0 percent of the country’s total goat inventory. (Figure 2 and Table 2)

TECHNICAL NOTES

This Goat Situation Report presents the goat industry in terms of volume
of production, inventory by age group, and average farmgate price. The
report is prepared to serve as a ready reference for PSA’s various clients
and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly; that is,
every January, May, August, and November.

Concepts and Definitions

Volume of production refers to the volume of locally-raised goat

disposed for slaughter including those which were shipped out to other
regions/provinces for slaughter. This is expressed in metric ton,
liveweight.

Inventory refers to the actual number of goat present in the farm as of a

specific reference date.

Farmgate price refers to the price received by raisers for their produce
at the location of farm. Thus, the marketing cost, such as the transport
and other marketing cost (if any) incurred in selling the produce, is not
included in the farmgate prices.
