Problem:
Ronie surveyed 300 people at the Palarong Pambansa and asked them what event is
their favorite. He made the pie graph below. What is the exact number of people who
answered each event as their favorite?
Favorite Event in the Palarong Pambansa

Basketball
40%

Volleyball Chess 2%
25% Arnis 3%

Football 5%
Swimming Track and Field 10%
15%
Solve using the 4-Step Plan

UNDERSTAND:
a. What is asked?
The exact number of people in each choice of event
b. What are the given facts?

basketball – 40%, Volleyball – 25%, swimming – 15%, track and

field -10%, football – 5%, arnis – 3%, chess – 2%
PLAN:

What operations shall we use to solve the problem? Multiplication of

decimals with fractions

Ask: What formula are we going to use to get the value of the
percentage?

To get the number of people who answered each event as their

favorite, Multiply the given percent by the total number of
respondents = ( % x B). Where B = 300
SOLVE:
Basketball: 40% x 300
0.40 X 300 = 120.00 120

Volleyball: 25% x 300

0.25 X 300 = 75.00 75

Swimming: 15% x 300

0.15 X 300 = 45.00 45

Track and Field: 10% x 300

0.10 X 300 = 30.00 30
Football: 5% x 300
0.10 X 300 =15.00 15

Arnis: 3% x 300
0.03 X 300 = 9.00 9

Chess: 2% x 300
0.02 X 300 = 6.00 6

There are 120, 75, 45, 30, 15, 9 and 6 people who answered basketball,
volleyball, Swimming, Track and Field, Football, Arnis and Chess
respectively as their favorite event.
CHECK:

Add all the equivalent percentage or number of people to get the 300
number of respondents.

120 + 75+ 45+ 30+15+9 + 6 = 300

Read the situation presented below then, answer the following questions.
According to Inquirer.Net dated August 9, 2020, the additional of 2174 reported
Covid-19 cases were from these provinces. What is the exact number of people
in each province infected with the virus?

4.3%
4.5%
5.2%
UNDERSTAND:

a. What is asked?

The exact number of people in each province infected with virus

b. What are the given facts?

NCR - 78.2%, Laguna - 7.8%, Cebu - 5.2%, Rizal - 4.5%, Cavite - 4.3%
PLAN:

What operations shall we use to solve the problem? Multiplication

Ask: What formula are we going to use to get the value of the
percentage?

To get the number of infected people in each province, Multiply the

given percent by the total number of respondents =( % x B). Where B
= 2174
SOLVE: Recall the multiplication of decimal numbers.
NCR (National Capital Region) - 78.2 % of 2174 =
0.782 x 2174 = 1 700

Laguna - 7.8 % of 2174

= .078 x 2174 = 170

Cebu = 5.2% of 2174

= .052 x 2174 = 113
Rizal - 4.5% of 2174
= .045 x 2174 = 98

Cavite - 4.3% of 2174

= .043 x 2174 = 93

There are 1700, 170, 113, 98, and 93 people from NCR, Laguna,
Cebu, Rizal and Cavite respectively were infected with Corona Virus
as of August 9, 2020.
1. What province has the most number of people infected with
Corona Virus? National Capital region (NCR)

2. What province has the least number of people infected with Corona
Virus? Cavite
CHECK:

Add all the equivalent percentage or number of people to get the 2174
number of infected cases.
