»Evaluate functions.
DO YOU STILL REMEMBER?
Given the following expression, find its value if x = 3.
1. x - 9
=x-9
= (3) - 9
2. 3x+7
= 3x + 7
= 3(3) + 7

DO YOU STILL REMEMBER?
Given the following expression, find its value if x = 3.
1. x - 9
=x-9
= (3) - 9
Since x = 3, we just replace
x = 3 in the expression then
subtract by 9.
01
3.
=
After replacing x by 3, we get
the squared of 3 which is 9, add
it to the product of 4 and 3, then
lastly, we subtracted 10 from its

= sum.
=-6
= 9 + 12 - 10
2. 3x+7 = 21- 10

Following the steps, we just
= 3x + 7 = 11
replace x by 3, multiply it by
= 3(3) + 7 the numerical coefficient 3,
then add 7
=9+7
= 16
Types of Functions

01
1. Constant Function
A constant function is a function that has the same output value no matter what your input value is.
It has the form f(x) = b, where b is a constant.
Example: y = 7

2. Identity Function

SECTION
The Identity function is a function which returns the same value, which was used as its argument.
It is the function f(x) = x, for all values of x.
Example: f(2) = 2
3. Polynomial Function Enter a subtitle here if you need it
A polynomial function is defined by y = , where n is a non-negative integer and

4. Linear Function

The polynomial function with degree one. It is in the form y = mx+b

Example: y = 2x+5
Types of Functions

01
5. Quadratic Function

The polynomial function with degree two. It is express as y =

Example: y = +2x+5

6. Cubic Function

SECTION
A cubic polynomial function is a polynomial of degree three and can be denoted by f(x) =
Example: y =

7. Power Function Enter a subtitle here if you need it

A power function is in the form of y=
Example: f(x) =
8. Rational Function

Is any function which can be represented by a rational fraction say, in which p(x) is numerator and
q(x) is the denominator where q(x) ≠ 0 . Example: f(x )=
Types of Functions

01
9. Exponential Function

These are functions of the form y = where x is the exponent and a and b are constant
Example: y =

10. Logarithmic Function

SECTION
Logarithmic functions are the inverses of exponential function.
Example: y =

11. Absolute Function Enter a subtitle here if you need it

Define by f(x) = /x/, it is known as absolute value function.
Example: y = /x-4/ + 2

12. Greatest Integer Function

Evaluation of Functions

01
» Is the process of determining the value of the function at the number assigned to a

given variable.

» Just like in evaluating algebraic expressions, to evaluate function, you just need to:

SECTION
a.) replace each letter in the expression with the assigned value
b.) perform the operations in the expression using the correct order of operations

LET’S TRY THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES

EXAMPLE 1.
Given f(x) = 2x – 4, find the value of the function if x = 3
EXAMPLE 2. Given g(x) = , find g(-3)

EXAMPLE 3.
SECTION
Given h(x) = , find the value of function if x = -5

EXAMPLE 5.
Evaluate the function h(x) = //x// + 2, given x = 2.4
EXAMPLE 1. EXAMPLE 2.

Given f(x) = 2x – 4, find the value of the function if x = 3 Given g(x) = , find g(-3)

Solution:

f(x) = 2x-4
f(3) = 2(3)-4
f(3) = 6-4
01 Solution:

g(x) = 3
g(-3) = 3
g(-3) = 3(9)+7
f(3) = 2
SECTION g(-3) = 34

Solution Solution
h(x) =
f(x) = 5x + 1
h(-5) = f(h+1) = 5(h+1) +1
f(h+1) = 5h+5+1
h(-5) = f(h+1) = 5h+6

Solution: if you need it
h(x) = //x// + 2
h(2.4) = //2.4// + 2
