Diving into Mastery Guidance for Educators

Each activity sheet is split into three sections, diving, deeper and deepest, which are
represented by the following icons:
These carefully designed activities take your
children through a learning journey, initially
ensuring they are fluent with the key concept being
Diving taught; then applying this to a range of reasoning
and problem-solving activities.

These sheets might not necessarily be used in a

linear way. Some children might begin at the
Deeper
‘Deeper’ section and in fact, others may ‘dive
straight in’ to the ‘Deepest’ section if they have
already mastered the skill and are applying this to
show their depth of understanding.

• Multiply multi-digit numbers up to 4 digits by a 2-digit whole number using
the formal written method of long multiplication.

Shania has completed a calculation but she has made some mistakes. Explain her
mistakes and then calculate the correct answer.

5 1 3 5 1 3
× 4 2 × 4 2
2 0 5 2 1 0 2 6
1 0 2 6 0 2 0 5 2 0
1 2 3 1 2 2 1 5 4 6

Accept any explanation that shows that Shania has calculated 513 × 4 and 513 ×
20 rather than multiplying by 2 and 40.

Miranda is calculating 4217 × 21.

She says… I can work out 4217 × 10 and
double it. Then, I need to add
21 to find the answer. The
answer is 84 340.

Do you agree with Miranda’s method?

Explain your reasons.

Accept an explanation that shows that

Miranda is not correct. After she has worked
out 4217 × 10 and doubled it to find 4217 ×
20, she needed to add 4217 to her total to
find the answer to 21 lots of 4217. The
answer should be 88 557.
