CE 343
1) Length of Pace Using Tape and Odometer

Jordan University of Science and Technology

Civil Engineering Department

1
Introduction
• Surveying: The science deals with earth
measurements.

• Types of Surveying:
1. Engineering Surveying: ‫هندسة ا لمساحة‬
2. Property Surveying:‫أمالكو عقارات‬
3. Inventory Surveying:‫ جمع ا لمعلومات‬GIS
4. Space exploration : GPS
Introduction
• Measurements vs. Computation

a)Measurements
1) have instruments
2)have error
3) Human Operator
4) 1+1≠2 (= 2±σ)

b)Computations
1) no instrument
2) no error
3) Human Operator
4) 1 + 1=2 (exact solution)
Types of measurements:
category 1:
non-linear
linear: (angular):
Horizontal angle
Distance
3-d coordinates
Vertical angle
Point location
Surface in 3D
Area
Volume
Types of measurements:
category 2:
By
direct:-
product:-
Area
Distance
3-d coordinate
Volume
Elevation
Digital elevation model (E.D.M)
Angle
Contours
Type of error
• Blunder error:- error due to carelessness of
human.
• Random error :- error not easy to detect
(small value )
• Systematic error:- mathematic model.
• Constant error:- manufacturing.
Distance measurement

1. Pace.
2. Chain.
3. Tape.
4. Odometer.
5. Tacheometer.
6. EDM.
7. Total station ( x, y , z ).
1-Pace :-

• Medium ( neither long or short ) .

• Pace length depends on legs opening.

Length of pace = Length in m/ Number of paces

2- tape :-

• Type of tape :-

1. Woven tape .

2. Steel tape .
3- odiometer :-

• One rev =2Πr

N rev = d then d = 2Π r n
1. Length of Pace Using Tape and Odometer
Objective

- The main objective of this exercise is to

determine the length of pace using
distance measuring equipment

11
1. Length of Pace Using Tape and Odometer
Description of the Exercise
- It is required to measure a distance of 100 m
using three different techniques:

1. Tape
2. Odometer
3. Pace

100 m

12

Description of the Exercise

Group 2 Group 1

Group 4 Group 3

13
1. Length of Pace Using Tape and Odometer
Description of the Exercise

- 100 m distance is to be measured using the tape

and the odometer

- The 100 m distance will be measured in forward

and backward (opposite) directions and
recorded. The average of the two measurements
will be calculated

14
1. Length of Pace Using Tape and Odometer
Description of the Exercise

- Each student in each group is required to

contribute in fieldwork and measurements

- To measure the length of pace, each student in

the group will be required to walk the specified
distance (100 m) to count his/her paces. The
number of paces will be recorded

15
1. Length of Pace Using Tape and Odometer
Description of the Exercise

- The average length of pace will be calculated by

dividing the average length of the desired
distance by the number of paces for each
student in the group

- The measurements in both directions should

agree to within a few centimeters. Neglect
(discard) measurement that are outside this
range

16
1. Length of Pace Using Tape and Odometer
Description of the Exercise

- Each student in each group is required to submit

a separate laboratory report

- Laboratory reports are due one week from the

date of the exercise
