International STATISCTICS
Nature of Traffic and Road Users
Road safety parameters
• Modes of Transport
• Traffic Patterns
• Classification of Road Users
• Behaviour of Road Users on Road
Modal Share in broad terms–
Pakistan situation
Modes in Road Transport
• Motorized
– Cars
– Motorcycles
– Rickshaws
– Buses/Mini Buses
– Trucks/Trailers
• Non-Motorized
– Bicycles
– Animal push Carts (Donkey/Horse Carts)
– Pedestrians (Walking Mode)
NATURE OF TRAFFIC
• Traffic nature varies accordingly with the changes in the environment
and areas
• Mixed flow pattern of traffic (Heterogeneous traffic) is normally
observed in Karachi, Pakistan. Mostly due to existence of extremes of
wealth and poor (dual economies)
Traffic Patterns and Road Accidents
• Increase in traffic flow (exposure to road)
…..increase in Road Accidents
• Increase in speed….Increase in Road Accidents

• Depending on the degree of heterogeneity in

the traffic mix, fatalities and injuries may
decrease even if the exposure of vulnerable
road users (road users outside car and buses)
increases. (See next slide)
More on Traffic Heterogeneity
• This traffic is characterized
by lack of any effective
channelization, mode
segregation or control of
speeds.

• Lane discipline is deficient

in heterogeneous traffic ,
creating more conflict
points
