Introduction
Formating is organising or arranging
the text according to a chosen
pattern. It helps in changing the
appearance of the text. This is done
by using various fonts, colors, size
and styles.
Every software package has pre-
defined settings. These are called
default settings. Formatting helps
you to change the default settings of
the computer as per your choise.
Formatting Text
Formatting is the process of applying font style, characteristics,
colors etc., to a text or a paragraph. In other words, it is the way
the text appears on a page. The default font size is 12 points.
Thus, any new word document in Ms word would have text in
“TIMES NEW ROMAN”, 12 points by default.
CHAPTER 2 FONT NAME
FORMATTING A font is a set letters and symbols in a particular
TEXT design and size. Each font has a name.

FORMATTING The size of the text is called the font size. It is


maeasured in points. There are 72 points in a inch.

FONT STYLE
The way in which a character is emphasized is called its font style. The most common
styles are bold, italic and underline.

Bold Bold text is printed darker than normal text so that


words and phares stand out on a page. It is often
used for titles and headings.

Italic Italic text is slanted. It mostly used for


emphasis. It is sometimes used for headings.

Underline Underline text has a line under it. You


can select the underline style from the
underline style drop down list.
SUPERSCRIPT
Superscript reduces the size of the text and raises it
to the top of current line.
Example :

SUBSCRIPT
Superscript is a text style that reduces the size of the
text and lowers it to the bottom of current line.

Font Color
It used to change the color of the text to emphasise headings, subheadings,
and other text.
Text Highlighting Color
You can highlighting the text in a word document with different color. It is usually
done mark some important facts in the text. The steps to highlight the text are
given below.
1. Select the “Text Highlight Color” features from the Formatting toolbar. You may
also choose different colors for highlighting.
2. The cursor changes to a highlighter pen. Move the pen over the text to be
highlighted
3. To remove the highlighted color from the text select no color from the “Text
Highlight Color”. Then select the text again.
Text Alignment
The text alignment refers to the text layout with respect to
document margins. There are four types of alignments. These
are discussed here. It is very simple to change the alignment of
text. Follow these steps to change the alignment.
1. Select the text that you wish to align.
2. Click on the appropriate alignment button in the Formatting
Toolbar.
3. For example, to align text to the left, select the text and click
on the Align Left button.
Left Alignment
It is the default alignment. In this type of alignment, the text is
aligned from the left and ragged from the right edge.
Right Alignment
In this type of the text alignment, the text is aligned from the right
edge and ragged from the left side.
Center Alignment
The alignment aligns the text centrally and leaves it ragged at
the right and the left edges.
Justify Alignment
In this alignment, the text is flushed both left and right. Thus none
of the left and right edges of the appears ragged
Bullets and Numbering
In a document when the user want to display data in the form of
points; bullets and numbers are used. By default, MS word uses a
simple black dot as a bullet.
In a bulleted text each item of a list is added by the use of an Enter
key. It acts as a new paragraph. Each item is prefixed by a symbol
called a bullet or a number.
In order to display an unordered list, bullets ( ) are used. If a
document requires an ordered list then number list is used.
