QUESTION NO. 2

What is the impact of Chinese culture on contemporary

Philippines society and compare it with the impact of
Chinese Culture on the 19 Century Philippines
● There is a lot of influence of China's over the Philippines such as the traditional
celebration of Chinese New Year, and also popular food, such as noodles, pancit, and
sweet and sour dishes. Chinese pottery, ceramics, and metal vessels for domestic
purposes are another proof of the presence of the Chinese in Filipino art and culture.
Lacquerware, jade, porcelain, and Chinese furniture are also found in many Filipino
homes but the main influence of China in Philippines is trading. China is the largest
trading partner of the Philippines, China influences the country’s business and
politics. Bilateral trade between China and the Philippines is near$17.6 billion each
year. The Philippines export more goods to China than anywhere else, which
increases China’s influence over Philippine officials. People in the Philippines also try
to learn Mandarin to prepare them for establishing relationships with Chinese-
speaking workers and business owners. Even before the Chinese took a very
prominent economic role in the 19th century as wholesalers, retailers, and producers.
They brought porcelain and silk, in exchange for beeswax,
deer horn and trepang (sea slug). The trade with China was
the beginning of a major influence and contribution within
the Filipino culture. Before in 19th century the Chinese
mestizos were an important element of the Philippines
society. They played significant role in the formation of the
Filipino middle class, in the agitation for reforms, in the
1898 revolution, and in the formation of what is now known
as the Filipino nationality. in contemporary times their role
in nation building continues.
