COURSE
OBJECTIVES
After the different activities learned in this course, the students
must have:
a) Learned the importance of physical education through fitness.
b) Developed and maintained good health and high level of
physical fitness.
c) Acquired and performed the fundamentals of different motor
skills.
d) Known his or her physical fitness status so that he can
determine his strengths and weaknesses.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
e) Identified the five (5) objectives of physical education.
f) Acquired and practiced desirable social traits necessary for
adjustment to happy living and to social life, in general.
g) Appreciated the contribution of physical fitness to the total
well-being, a rich and a full life in accordance with the
JOSEPHIAN ATTRIBUTES.
Objectives of physical education
1. To equip students with the knowledge, skills, capacities, and values along
with the enthusiasm to maintain a health lifestyle into adulthood
2. As a way to promote weight loss in students
3. To develop motor skills
4. To instill knowledge and understanding of rules, concepts and strategies,
and
5. To teach students to work as part of a team, or as individuals, in a wide
variety of competitive activities.
WHAT IS
PHYSICAL
EDUCATION?
Physical Education is an important segment of
general education, which aims to contribute to the
total development of the learner through
participation in selected vigorous activities. It
provides opportunities to acquire lifelong skills that
are essentials to his physical, mental, social,
emotional and spiritual development. (Oyco, 2000)
Physical Education is an educational process that
uses physical activity as a means to help individuals
acquire skills, fitness, knowledge, and attitude that
contribute to their optimal development and well-
being.

Physical Education is an integral part of the
educational program designed to promote the
optimum development of an individual, physically,
mentally, socially, emotionally, and spiritually
through total body movements in the performance of
properly selected physical activities.

Physical Development
To be able to maintain lifelong health and high level of physical-
fitness, one should actively participate in physical activities.
Thus by engaging in physical activities, one can enhance his growth
and development. An individual who engage in sports and
recreational activities will be able to lead a healthy lifestyle and will
avoid the risk of various health problems.
Social Development

Participation in the physical education activities


provides opportunities for the development of
desirable social traits needed for adjustments to
the social life of individuals in general.
Social Development
Some worthwhile traits, which may be developed by anyone who
involves himself/herself in physical activities, are:
• Friendliness
• Cooperation
• Respect for the rights of others
• Good sportsmanship
• Honesty in group competition
• A Good Leader and a Good Follower
Emotional Development
The informal nature of physical education activities offers
opportunities for self-expression and emotional mastery.
Examples of worthwhile emotional traits that may be developed
are:
1. Self-confidence

3. Self-reliance
4. Courage
5. Determination
Mental Development
Through participation in physical education activities, the
individual develops his mental capacities as he learns the
mechanical principles underlying movements as he acquires
knowledge and understanding of rules and strategies of games
and sports, and the ability to analyze and give judgments.
Spiritual Development

himself, his family and his neighbors.
