What is Drafting?

Drafting is the process of making technical

drawings. Yes, even though drawing and
drafting are different, drawing is still an
important part of drafting. Drafting always
involves drawing, but drawing doesn’t always
involve drafting.

What is Drawing?
Drawing is the process of making a pictorial
representation of something. Like, drawing a
picture of your dog. As we talked about, there
are a lot of subsets of drawing.
The key difference between drawing and
drafting is that drafting has to be technical in
nature, while drawing doesn’t have to be
technical. Drawing refers to making any type of
artistic picture, while drafting refers to making
technical drawings, such as those used for
structures and buildings.
TECHNICAL DRAFTING/DRAWING
Technical drawing, also known as drafting or draughting, is the
act and discipline of composing plans that visually communicate how
something functions or is to be constructed. Technical drawing is
essential for communicating ideas in industry and engineering. To
make the drawings easier to understand, people use familiar symbols,
perspectives, units of measurement, notation systems, visual styles,
and page layout. Together, such conventions constitute a visual
language, and help to ensure that the drawing is unambiguous and
relatively easy to understand. A drafter, draftsperson,
or draughtsman is a person who makes a drawing. A professional
drafter who makes technical drawings is sometimes called a drafting
technician.
Drawing is a visual art that uses an instrument to mark
paper or another two-dimensional surface.Theinstrument
mightbe pencils, crayons, pens with inks, brushes
with paints, or combinations of these, and in more modern
times, computer styluses with graphics tablets.
DRAFTING TOOLS

These are handheld instruments that aids in accomplishing a

task. In technical drafting, it is typically used to perform accurate or
precise dimensions. It can also be termed as reusable for it can be
used repeatedly on different drafting projects. You have to observe
proper handling and caring for good quality results.
T-square
A T-square is a technical
drawing instrument
used by draftsmen
primarily as a guide for
drawing horizontal lines
on a drafting table
Triangles
Triangles are used in
combination with the T-square
or straightedge to draw vertical
and inclined lines. They are
usually made of transparent
plastic, which allows you to see
your work underneath the
triangle.
Triangular Scale

A triangular scale is a
ruler that has a 3-lobed cross-
section with 6 different types
of scales on the edges (2 on
each face) used for measuring
and preparing scale drawings
such as blueprints and maps. It
is also called an architect’s
scale.
Eraser Shield

An eraser shield is a thin

sheet of stainless steel or
plastic with slots and holes of
different shapes. They are
designed to allow erasers to be
used through them to erase
lines and text without
removing lines close by which
do not need to be (or should
not be) erased.
Compass (drawing tool)

A compass, more accurately

known as a pair of compasses, is a
technical drawing instrument that
can be used for inscribing circles
or arcs.
Compass (drawing tool)

A compass, more accurately known

as a pair of compasses, is a technical
drawing instrument that can be used for
inscribing circles or arcs. As dividers, it can
also be used as a tool to mark out
distances, in particular, on maps.
Compasses can be used for mathematics,
drafting, navigation and other purposes.
PROTRACTOR

A protractor is an
instrument used for
measuring angles in
degrees.
