Helpful
Skills /
Attributes
FOR INTERPRETING
Analytical Skill
Krosel, A. (2023). Tells us that “Interpretation
requires analytical skills, as you may interpret the
speaker's words to understand and convey their
meaning clearly”.

For example, imagine the speaker uses an idiom

without an exact match in other languages.

You might apply analytical skills to determine the

best way to interpret their statement.
Active listening Skill
Garcia, R. (2023). Tell us that: “Listening is a core
responsibility for interpreters”

It's crucial that you're able to understand the

speaker's exact meaning and translate it as exactly as
possible.

Listening skills also help you understand the

speaker's emotions and state of mind. This may
further your understanding of their message and
improve your interactions with them.
Multitasking
Skill
Eads, A. (2023). Notes that “When interpreting, you
listen to what the speaker says while you interpret
their previous sentence”.

People who can perform multiple tasks at once with

accuracy might excel at the role.

The job also requires you to think about two

languages at once, so the ability to balance both can
be crucial.
Memory and
Concentration Skill
SeproTec (2023). Argues that: “A good interpreter must be
able to remember all the terms used in the source language
so that they can convey them perfectly in the target
language”.

They must also be completely focused on what they

are doing and employ all of their senses in listening,
understanding, analyzing and speaking
simultaneously.
Ethical Skill
SeproTec (2023). Argues that:
“Communication is an extremely
complex process during which the
interpreter must take decisions”..

That said, they must be governed by

their professional ethics: integrity,
accuracy, confidentiality, competence
and neutrality.
Cultural Skill
Ibanez, F. (2017). Tell us that: “Language and culture are
closely linked, so it is important that every interpreter knows
the culture of both languages very well”.

In some situations cultural differences become more

evident, and it is on those occasions when a good
interpreter demonstrates his or her best abilities.

For example: When an interpreter must translate between an American

and a Latino, the Latino tells him: "Este trabajo es bien papayita" he is
not going to translate it literally but he adapts it to his language and
tells him: This work is peace of cake.”
