 Желязо
Желязото е химичен елемент, метал, с атомен номер 26 и символ Fe-ferrum.
Той е част от група 8 и период 4 на периодичната система, поради което се
класифицира като преходен метал. Желязото и неговите сплави, най-вече
стоманата, са най-масово използваните метали и феромагнити в ежедневния
живот.
Повърхността му е блестяща и сребристо-сива, но изложена на въздух
оксидира и се покрива с червен или кафяв железен оксид (ръжда).
Отделните кристали чисто желязо са меки (по-меки от алуминия), като
добавянето на относително малки примеси значително увеличава
твърдостта и якостта. Стоманата представлява сплав на желязото с малко
количество въглерод и други метали и може да бъде 1000 пъти по-твърда от
чистото желязо.
Желязото е един от елементите, известни още от
древността, за които няма автор на откритието им и
човекът ги е използвал за различни цели в своето
ежедневие. Било е достъпно и обработването му не е било
особено трудно. Има доказателства, че метеоритите са
били използвани като източник на желязо.

Железни изделия от метеоритно желязо са намерени в

Египет и Месопотамия, отнасящи се до много древни
времена. Желязната епоха е последният технологичен и
културен стадий в развитието на човечеството в каменно-
бронзово-желязната последователност. Данни за
настъпването на „железния век“, в които металът напълно
заменя бронза в инструментите и оръдията, варират
географски, започвайки от Средния Изток.
 Физични свойства на желязото
Желязото е типичен метал, в свободно състояние има
блестящ сребристо-бял цвят със сивкав оттенък. Чистият
метал е пластичен, ковък, различните примеси (в частност –
въглеродът) повишават неговата твърдост и крехкост.
Притежава ярко изразени магнитни свойства.
Твърдостта на чистото желязо има толкова устойчиви стойности,
че често се използва за калибриране на измервания или
сравнение на изпитвания, но механичните свойства на желязото
се влияят силно от наличието на примеси. Чистите железни
кристали са по-меки от алуминия.При силно нагряване желязото
омеква и може да се изтегля под форма на тел и листове. То е
топлопроводимо и електропроводимо. Желязото проявява
магнитни свойства. Топи се при много висока температура – 1536
градуса по целзий.
 Химични свойства на желязото
Желязото реагира с:

1. Кислород - образува пряко трижелезен тетраоксид(Fe3O4), който може да се разглежда като смес от железен оксид
(FeO) и дижелезен триоксид (Fe2O3).

2. Въглерод - образува така наречените желязо - въглеродни сплави, като чугун и стомана.

3. Други неметали то образува съединения в +3 СО.

4. Разредени киселини и разтвори на някои соли - образува съответните соли(FeCl2; FeSO4) в +2 СО.

5. Концентрирана сярна или азотна киселина - желязото се пасивира.

6. Концентрирани основи при висока температура - образува соли.

7. Соли на метали, стоящи след него в РОАМ.

 Оксиди:

FeO - Железния оксид е оксид на желязото в +2 СО. Той образува черни кубични кристали неразтворими във вода, но лесно
разтворими в киселини. Железния оксид е основен оксид.

Fe2O3 - Дижелезния троксид е оксид на желязото в +3СО,съществува под формата на три кристални модификазий,
съответно тъмно червени кристали, кафяви кристали и модификация разлагаща се при 1500оC. Той е амфотерен оксид.

Fe3O4 - Трижелезния тетраоксид е смес от FeO и Fe2O3. В природата се среща като минерала магнетит. Той се окислява при
загряване до Fe2O3.
Хидроксиди:

Fe(OH)2 - Железния дихидроксид се получава като бяла утайка при взаимодействие на разтворими соли на желязото в +2 СО с
алкални основи, която бързо се окислява от въздуха до зелена утайка, окисляваща се допълнително по-късно до червено-
кафявия железен трихидроксид(Fe(OH)3). Fe(OH)2 има основни свойства и се разтваря в киселини.

Fe(OH)3 - Железния трихидроксид е червено-кафява утайка - хидроксид на тривалентното желязо. Има амфотерни свойства и
се разтваря в киселини и алкални основи.
