Progressivism
Why teach?

 The progressivist are identified with need-based and relevant curriculum.

 This is curriculum that “responds to students' needs and they relate to
students' personal lives and experiences.”

Progressivism
Why teach?

 The progressivists accept the impermanence of life and the inevitability of

change.
 Change is the only thing that does not change. Hence, progressivist
teachers are more concerned with teaching the learners the skills to cope
with change.

Progressivism
Why teach?

 The subjects that are given emphasis in progressivist schools are the
“natural and social science.”
 Teachers expose students to many new scientific, technological, and
social developments, reflecting the progressivist notion that progress and
change are fundamental.

Progressivism
Why teach?

 Progressivist teachers employ experimental methods – “one learns by

doing”
 Book learning is no substitute for actual experience (Dewey). One
experiential teaching method that progressivist teachers heavily rely on is
the problem-solving method.

NATURE, ORIGIN & MOTIVES

• Essentialism began in the 1930s and 1940s.

• It was a response to Progressivism’s overemphasis on a child-
centered approach to education.
• There was a concern that schools were not helping students
develop an appropriate knowledge.

PRINCIPLES OF ESSENTIALISM

• Learning involves hard work and discipline.

• The teacher has the authority.
• The core objective is for the student to learn the essential
subjects(which can change over time).
• School should use traditional methods of instructions (lecture,
rote memorization)

AN ESSENTIALIST CLASSROOM

• A place where children come to learn what they need to know.

• The teacher is the person who can best instruct students, so
s/he does not let students’ interests determine what is taught.
• Lessons involve thinking and reasoning rather that hands-on,
“learning by doing” activities.
