A system of linear inequalities in two variables consists
of at least two linear inequalities in the same variables.
The solution of a linear inequality is the ordered pair

that is a solution to all inequalities in the system and
the graph of the linear inequality is the graph of all
solutions of the system. The following are examples of
systems of linear inequalities in two variables

7
SOLUTION/S to the Systems of Linear inequalities: (1, -
2)

▸ GRAPH
WHAT TO DO:
1. INPUT the two linear inequalities in two variables
in the Geogebra.
2. Observe the double shaded portion.
3. Check the point ( 1, -2) location. Is it a solution to
the system?
4. If the point is located in the double shaded portion
of the graph, then it is a solution.
5. By substituting the values of the x and y
coordinates, you should make the inequalities
both TRUE. Then the point is a solution.

8
To draw the graph of a system of linear inequalities in two variables, we simply follow
the steps to that of the linear inequality in two variables. They are as follows.

▸ 1) Replace the inequality symbol with an equal sign. The

resulting equation becomes a plane divider.
▸ 2) Determine the intercepts of each equation.
▸ 3) Plot the points on the same Cartesian Plane.
▸ 4) Graph the resulting equation with a solid line if the
original inequality is ≥ or ≤. The solid line indicates that all
points on the line are part of the solution set of the inequality.
If the inequality symbol is > or <, a broken line will be used. The
broken line indicates that the coordinates of all points on the
line are not part of the solution set of the inequality.
9
To draw the graph of a system of linear inequalities in two variables, we simply follow
the steps to that of the linear inequality in two variables. They are as follows.

▸ 5) Use the origin (0, 0) as test point. If the

statement is TRUE, the point of origin is included
on the shaded part. If the statement is FALSE, the
point of origin is NOT included on the shaded
part.
▸ 6) The region where shaded areas overlap is
the graphical solution of the system.
▸ 7) Choose a point on the solution set.

EXAMPLE NUMBER 1

There are at most 56 people composed of

children and adult who are in a bus. Each
child and adult paid Php 80 and Php 100
respectively. If the total amount collected
was not more than Php 4800, how many
adults and children are in the bus?

12
representations

We have to write an
Let : x = be let : y= inequality to represent
the number of persons in
the number be the the bus which is x + y ≤
56 (at most ) To
of children in number of represent the amount
collected, we have the
the bus adults in the inequality 80x + 100
bus y ≤ 4800 (not more
than )
.

EXAMPLE NUMBER 2

The Grade 9 students are planning to host the school dance

for next year. They would like to make at least a Php 500
profit from selling tickets. They estimate that at most 300
students will attend the dance. They will earn Php 3 for each
ticket purchased in advance and Php 4 for each ticket
purchased at the door. Suppose only 30 people will buy
advance tickets, how many people would need to buy tickets
at the door?

Checking: Choose a point on the solution set

(30, 120) 3x + 4y ≥ 500

x + y ≤ 300
