Probability Sampling

Sampling Technique in Research

RUBY V. PAGRAN
Definition of Probability Sampling

Probability sampling
- is a sampling technique in which
every member of the target
population has a known and equal
chance of being selected for the
sample.
Types of Probability Sampling Techniques

• Stratified Sampling
- thepopulation is divided into
distinct subgroups, and samples
are taken from each subgroup.
Types of Probability Sampling Techniques

• Stratified Sampling
You can calculate the number of people
needed from each group using the following
formula:
• Stratified Sampling
Example:
Types of Probability Sampling Techniques

Cluster Sampling
- thepopulation is divided into
clusters, and entire clusters are
randomly selected.
Cluster Sampling

Types of Cluster Sampling

- Single-stage cluster sampling
a simple random sample of clusters is selected, and data are
collected from every unit in the sampled clusters
- Two-stage cluster sampling
a simple random sample of clusters is selected and then a simple
random sample is selected from the units
- Multi-stage cluster sampling
is a complex type of cluster sampling. The researcher divides the
population into groups at various stages
Types of Probability Sampling Techniques

Multi-stage Sampling
- A combination of different sampling
techniques is used to select the sample.
-
Types of Multistage Sampling
1. Multistage cluster sampling
- is a complex form of cluster sampling because the researcher has
to divide the population into clusters or groups at different stages
so that the data can be easily collected, managed, and interpreted.
2. Multistage random sampling
- a multistage random sampling technique is not too different from
multistage cluster sampling; however, the samples are selected
randomly at each stage by the researcher.
Stratified Sampling

• Stratified sampling is a probability

sampling technique where the
population is divided into homogeneous
subgroups called strata.
• Samples are then taken from each
stratum in proportion to their
representation in the population.
Cluster Sampling

• Cluster sampling is a probability sampling

technique where the population is divided into
clusters.
• Clusters are selected randomly, and all members
within the selected clusters are included in the
sample.
• Commonly used in market research to study
consumer behavior.
Multi-stage Sampling

• Multi-stage sampling is a probability sampling

technique that involves multiple stages of
sampling.
• For example, an initial sample may be selected
using simple random sampling, and then further
samples are taken within each initial sample
using another sampling technique.
• Allows for efficient sampling in large and
diverse populations.
Strengths and Weaknesses of Probability Sampling
Methods

Strengths:
• Probability sampling techniques provide a representative sample.
• They allow for statistical generalization from the sample to the population.
Weaknesses:
• Probability sampling techniques can be time-consuming and resource-intensive.
• They may not be suitable for small or highly specific populations.
Suitability of Probability Sampling Techniques for
Research Design
• The choice of probability sampling technique depends on the research design and
the characteristics of the population.

• Simple Random Sampling is suitable when the population is homogeneous and

there are no identifiable subgroups.

• Stratified Sampling is suitable when the population has distinct subgroups.

• Cluster Sampling is suitable when the population is large and geographically

dispersed.
Conclusion and Recap of Probability Sampling
Methods
• Probability sampling methods are essential in research as they ensure representative
samples and allow for generalization to the population.

• Different probability sampling techniques have their strengths and weaknesses,

making them suitable for specific research designs and populations.

• Choosing the appropriate probability sampling technique is crucial for obtaining

reliable and valid research results.
