 Used to
• Вживається, коли мова йде про якийсь
минулий стан або звичку, що вже не є
актуальними чи правдивими на
сьогоднішній день.
• Used to + інфінітив – можна замінити
Past Simple без різниці у значенні.
• Used to не має НІЧОГО спільного з
дієсловом use
 Ми жили в Римі
• We lived in Rome.
• We used to live in
Rome.
Вона багато подорожувала
• She travelled a lot.
• She used to travel a lot.
• Коли дія відбувалася в
минулому в точно визначений
час, ми вживаємо лише Past
Simple
• Вчора я ходив у зоопарк
• I went to the zoo yesterday
• Якщо дія відбувалася кілька
разів минулому в точно
визначений час – Past Simple
• Я ходив до кінотеатру 4 рази
минулого тижня
• I went to the cinema four times
last week
• Якщо кілька разів в невизначений
час – можна вживати used to +
інфінітив
• I used to go to the cinema four times a
week.
(колись я ходив до кінотеатру 4 рази
на тиждень)

• Речення з даним дієсловом
перекладаються так само як і
з used to:
у мене була звичка, я раніше…
• In the evening my mother would
cook dinner for all the family. –
Вечорами моя мама готувала
вечерю для всієї сім’ї
• I would spend a lot of time in the
library. –
Я проводив багато часу у
бібліотеці.
 Різниця
• USED TO використовується лише для
позначення стану, тобто вживається з
дієсловами: think, have, see, feel, smell, taste,
know, understand, imagine, doubt, remember,
want, forget, need, love, like, be …
• We used to think that whale is a kind of fish.
(NOT I would think)

My brother used to have a motorbike. (NOT

My brother would have)

Did you use to believe in Santa Claus?

(NOT Would you believe)

I used to know all the irregular verbs when I

was a schoolgirl. (NOT I would know)
• Would
• Every Saturday I would go on a long bike ride.
• My teachers would always say “Sit down and
shut up!”
• We can use ‘would’ to talk about repeated past
actions.

Often either ‘would’ or ‘used to’ is possible.

Both of these sentences are possible.
• Every Saturday, I would go on a long bike ride.
• Every Saturday I used to go on a long bike ride.
1. Past Simple – якщо ми повторюємо
точний час або кількість разів.
Дія може повторюватися і в
теперішньому часі.
2. Used to – якщо дія вже не
повторюється в теперішньому часі.
3. Would – звичка в минулому, яка
повторювалася знову і знову, відтінки
ностальгії.

2. I used not to visit/didn’t use to visit any faraway
places.
3. I didn’t used to read/didn’t use to read fantasy.
