The official currency of Dubai is the dirham, which is also
the currency of the other six emirates in the UAE. The
dirham is abbreviated as AED, which stands for Arab Emirate
Dirham. It is also known as the Emirati Dirham or Dubai
Dirham. The dirham was introduced on May 19, 1973,
replacing the Qatar and Dubai riyal. In 2023, the dirham
celebrated its 50th anniversary. The exchange rate is 3.67
dirhams for 1 dollar.

in which a person was injured are more severe (imprisonment
and/or a minimum fine of AED 25,000).
• In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the punishment for rape is
life imprisonment. However, if the victim is a minor or disabled,
the rapist can be sentenced to death.
• The death penalty is rarely carried out in the UAE. A panel of
three judges must agree on the decision to sentence someone to
death. The death penalty may not be executed until it is confirmed
by the UAE.
