Air Pollution

Conversation Class
Air pollution
 Air pollution is the contamination of air due to the presence of substances in
the atmosphere(air) that are harmful to the health of humans and other living
beings, or cause damage to the climate or to materials.
Cause of Air Pollution
 Factory
 Transportation
 Home cooking
 Wildfire
 Tobacco smoking
Factory
 Factories make useful products, but they also make waste. Unfortunately, factory
owners do not always dispose of waste safely. Factories often put dangerous chemicals
and other dangerous materials into the air, water, and ground. Pollution from factory
waste causes serious health problems for everyone in the community, and when it
travels in air and water, can even cause illness for people who live hundreds of miles
away.
Transportation
Vehicles air pollution emit ozone, particle pollution, and air toxics. The health effects of
vehicles air pollution affect millions of people, especially people who live near busy roads.
While this air pollution carries significant risks for human health and the environment,
through clean vehicle and fuel technologies, we can reduce emissions from our cars and
trucks.
Home cooking
 People use a variety of heat sources to cook food, including gas, wood, coal
and electricity. Each of these heat sources can create indoor air pollution
during cooking.
 Cooking can also generate unhealthy air pollutants from heating oil, fat and
other food ingredients, especially at high temperatures.
Wildfire
 A wildfire is an unplanned fire that burns in a natural area such as a forest,
grassland, … . Wildfires are often caused by human activity or a natural
phenomenon such as lightning, and they can happen at any time or
anywhere.
Tobacco smoking

 The air pollution emitted by cigarettes is 10 times greater than diesel car
exhaust. Smoking is one of the leading causes of lung cancer deaths in the
world. The industrial processing and smoking of cigarettes add huge volumes
of air pollutants into the atmosphere.
