STARTER: OBSERVING THE PICTURE
OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson the learners should be able to:

1. chooses appropriate qualitative research design
2. analyze a qualitative research design that are suited to the given
title
3. create a situations that can shows a different qualitative research
designs.
Lesson Proper

Design – is a word that means a plan that is

conceptualized by the mind. A design in the field
of research serves as a blueprint or a skeletal
framework of your research study. It includes
aspects of your research work from the purpose,
philosophical basis and types of research data
needed including your method of collecting,
analyzing, interpreting and presenting the data.
TYPES OF
QUALITATIVE
RESEARCH DESIGN
Ethnographic Research
• It is the study of a particular cultural group to get clear understanding of
its organizational set-up, internal operation and lifestyle
• A particular group reveals the nature of characteristics of their own
culture through the world perceptions of the cultural group’s members.
• The researcher is required to have actual participation in group
members’ activities.
• Realizing this type of qualitative research is living with the subjects in
several months; hence this is usually done by anthropologists whose
interests basically lie in cultural studies.
Examples
Phenomenology
• Coming from the word “phenomenon”, which means something
known through sensory experience. It refers to the study of how
people find their experiences meaningful.
• Its primary goal is to make people understand their experiences
about the death of loved ones, care for handicapped persons,
friendliness of people and etc. In doing so, other people will
likewise understand the meaning attached to their experiences.
• The researcher is prone to extending his time in listening to people’s
recount of their significant experiences.
• Those engaged in assisting people to manage their own lives
properly often do this qualitative kind of research.
Examples
Case Study
• It involves a long-time study of a person, group, organization or
situation. It seeks to find answers to why such things occur to the
subject.
• Finding the reason/s behind such occurrence drives you also delve into
relationships of people related to the case study.
• The researcher aims to determine why such a creature (person,
organization, thing or event) acts, behaves, occurs or exists in a
particular manner.
• Usually, it centers on an individual or a single subject matter.
Interviews, questionnaires, observations, a documentary analysis are
used in a case study.
Examples
Historical Study
• It is the examination of primary documents to make you
understand the connection of past events to the present
time.
Grounded Theory
• It takes place when you discover a new theory to underline
your study at the time of data collection and analysis.
• Through your observation of your subjects you will happen
to find a theory that applies to your current study.
• Interview, observations and documentary analysis are the
data gathering techniques for this type of qualitative research.
Examples
Performance Task

Direction: Choose one qualitative

research design and create a scenario
or situation that can apply in that
research design that you chose.
