BASIC
CONCEPT OF
SETS
SETS
Is a well-defined
collection of objects.
EXAMPLES:
1.The collection of first five natural numbers.
2.The collection of vowels of the English Alphabet.
3.The collection of whole numbers between 20
and 25.
4. The collection of natural numbers between 30
and 35.
5. The collection of letters that are there in the
word "MANGO".
ELEMENTS
of a set is any one of the distinct
objects that belong to that set. The
notation is used to denote that is an
element of set A.
EXAMPLES:
The collection of vowels of the English Alphabet.
= {a,e,i,o,u}
a
i
e
o
u
CARDINALITY
is the measure of the set’s size or the
number of the elements in a set. The
symbol represents the number of
elements of set A. It is read as the
“number of A” or the “cardinality of set
A”.
INTERSECTION
is the set that contains all the elements
that are common to both sets. If are any two
sets, the intersection of , denoted by , is the
set consisting of all elements that belong to
both .
EXAMPLES:
UNION
is a set that contains the elements
common to any of the sets. The
union of two sets , denoted by , is
the set of all elements that belongs
to A or to B.
EXAMPLES:
OTHER EXAMPLE:
If R is the set of colors in a rainbow and F is the set of colors
in the Philippine flag,
a) Name the elements of each set.
b) Identify their cardinality
c) Find their union
d) Find the intersection of these two sets.
e) Plot the relation of set R and F in a Venn Diagram.
QUESTIONS?
Let us try!
1.Name the elements of the set (I) of positive odd
integers less than 10.
2. Name the elements of the set (M) of positive
multiples of 3 less than 30.
3. Determine the cardinality of each set.
4. Find their union and intersection.
5. Illustrate the relationship of the sets in item #1 and
#2 in a Venn diagram.
QUIZ
Direction: Read, analyze and
answer the following problem.
Write your answer in a 1 whole
sheet of paper.
SITUATION:
If A is a set of months in a year and B is the set of months of
the year with exactly 30 days,
a) Name the elements of each sets.
b) Determine their cardinality.
c) Find their union
d) Find the intersection of the two sets,
e) Draw a Venn diagram representing the sets.
