Group 0, noble gases
Look at the Periodic Table and the Group 0 elements. Predict the
physical properties of these elements.

23/02/2024 C1 The Periodic Table 2

Key points
• Group 0 are called noble gases
• Non-metals
• Low melting and boiling points.
• Colourless gases at room temperature
• They are unreactive.
• All the noble gases exist in the earth’s atmosphere.
• Uses- Helium (low density) used for helium balloons.
• Uses- Neon used for signs.
• Uses- Argon- window insulation.

Patterns in properties
Physical properties – use the table to describe the pattern shown in
boiling points of Group 0 elements.
Element Boiling point
(°C)

Helium -269
Neon -246
Argon -186
Krypton -152
Xenon -108

Patterns in properties
Chemical properties:

The noble gases are mostly unreactive. They get slightly more reactive
going down the group:
• He and Ne never take part in chemical reactions.
• Ar can form the compound argon fluorohydride at temperatures below -
265°C.
• Kr reacts with the most reactive element there is, fluorine, to make krypton
difluoride, KrF2.
• Xe is very unreactive but can form compounds with fluorine and oxygen.

Uses of noble gases – 10 mins
Read the information sheets around the room and answer the questions
for the 3 different noble gases.

Questions – 5 mins
1. Complete the following sentence by choosing the correct words:
The atomic mass of the noble gas elements decreases/increases as you move
down the group from helium to xenon. This means the elements get
heavier/lighter as you move down the group. Noble gases are generally very
reactive/non-reactive.
2. State your predicted value for the relative atomic mass of krypton.
Explain how you chose this answer.
3. Radon is the next noble gas after xenon down the group. Predict
how radon’s relative atomic mass compares with that of xenon.

Peer Assess
1. The atomic mass of the noble gas elements increases as you move down
the group from helium to xenon. This means the elements get heavier as
you move down the group. Noble gases are generally non-reactive.
2. Students should have predicted a value greater than 40 and smaller than
131 and drawn a bar representing this accordingly. The actual value is 84
u. Credit should be given for predictions close to this value if it is clear
this value has been calculated logically.
3. The mass would be greater. This would follow the trend seen in the earlier
elements of an increase in mass moving down through the group.
