STEPS IN DEDUCTIVE TEACHING METHOD
Scott Thornbury’s 1999 book “How to Teach Grammar” provides
three very clear and simple steps to delivering a grammar lesson
using the deductive teaching methodology, These are:
1. THE RULE
past tense:
VERB+ ed
2. EXAMPLES
Present Tense:
Rule: Subject + base form of the verb.
Ex: Aina Johana eats breakfast every morning.
Future Tense:
Subject + future tense of the verb (will, shall) + base form of
the verb.
Ex: Nemmu and Dera will visit their grandparents nextweek.
Present Continuous (Progressive):
- Rule: Subject + (am, is, are) +verb -ing for regular verbs.
- Example: "Taffie and Ammar are studying for their exams."
Past Perfect:
- Rule: Subject + had + past participle of the main verb.
- Example: "Janna had already eaten when she arrived."
Future Perfect:
- Rule: Subject + will/shall+ have + past participle of the main
verb.
- Example: "Hassanah will have finished her project by
tomorrow”
Present Perfect Continuous (Progressive):
- Rule: Subject + have, has + been + verb-ing.
- Example: "Pidi and Febby have been studying for hours."
