STEPS IN DEDUCTIVE TEACHING METHOD
Scott Thornbury’s 1999 book “How to Teach Grammar” provides
three very clear and simple steps to delivering a grammar lesson
using the deductive teaching methodology, These are:

 Presentation and explanation of the grammar rule or rules by


the teacher.
 The teacher gives relevant examples which highlight the
relevant grammar structures.
 Finally students practise working with the rules and then
produce their own examples by the end of the lesson.
DEDUCTIVE

past tense:
VERB+ ed

2. EXAMPLES

I played softball yesterday.


My sister watched University War Yesterday.
They listened to music yesterday.
Past tense:
Ex: “Nur- Aisha watched a movie yesterday.”

Present Tense:
Rule: Subject + base form of the verb.
Ex: Aina Johana eats breakfast every morning.

Future Tense:
Subject + future tense of the verb (will, shall) + base form of
the verb.
Ex: Nemmu and Dera will visit their grandparents nextweek.
Present Continuous (Progressive):
- Rule: Subject + (am, is, are) +verb -ing for regular verbs.
- Example: "Taffie and Ammar are studying for their exams."

Past Continuous (Progressive):


- Rule: Subject + was, were + verb-ing.
- Example: "Alysa and Happy were watching a movie yesterday."

Future Continuous (Progressive):


- Rule: Subject + will be/ shall be+ verb-ing
- Example: "Norhanie and Pia will be traveling next week."
Present Perfect:
Rule: Subject + (have, has) + past participle of the main verb.
- Example: "Ashiya has worked in this company for five years."

Past Perfect:
- Rule: Subject + had + past participle of the main verb.
- Example: "Janna had already eaten when she arrived."

Future Perfect:
- Rule: Subject + will/shall+ have + past participle of the main
verb.
- Example: "Hassanah will have finished her project by
tomorrow”
Present Perfect Continuous (Progressive):
- Rule: Subject + have, has + been + verb-ing.
- Example: "Pidi and Febby have been studying for hours."

Past Perfect Continuous (Progressive):


- Rule: Subject + had + been + verb-ing
- Example: "Aiko had been working for two hours before she took a break."

Future Perfect Continuous (Progressive)


Rule: Subject+ will/ shall + have+ been+ verb-ing
Example: Nasibah and Azzla will have been working for three hours by the
time you arrive.
ANSWER THIS
Luffy studies English everyday (Provide the Present Continuous)

“ Luffy is studying English everyday.”

The girl reads a book. (Provide the Future Perfect)

“The girl will have read a book.”

They play soccer. (Provide the Past Perfect Continuous)


“They had been playing soccer for two hours before it started raining”
