Muscular
System
The muscular system is an organ system that permits movement of
the body, maintains posture, and circulates blood throughout the
body. It is made up of over 600 muscles, which can be divided into
three main types: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle.
Skeletal muscle
is the type of muscle that we most commonly think of when we think
of muscles. It is attached to bones by tendons and is responsible for
voluntary movement. Skeletal muscle is also responsible for
maintaining posture and generating heat.
Smooth
muscle
is found in the walls of hollow organs, such as the
stomach, intestines, and blood vessels. It is
responsible for involuntary movements, such as
peristalsis (the movement of food through the
digestive system) and vasodilation (the widening of
blood vessels).
Cardiac
muscle
is the type of muscle that makes up the heart. It is
responsible for the rhythmic contractions of the
heart that pump blood throughout the body. Cardiac
muscle is also involuntary, meaning that we cannot
consciously control it.
REMEMBER
The muscular system works closely with the nervous system to
control movement. The nervous system sends signals to the muscles
telling them when to contract and relax. When a muscle contracts, it
pulls on the bones that it is attached to, causing the body to move.
The muscular system is essential for many bodily
functions, including:
 Movement: Skeletal muscles allow us to move our bodies voluntarily.

 Posture: Skeletal muscles help us to maintain our posture and balance.

 Heat generation: Skeletal muscles generate heat when they contract,

which helps to keep our bodies warm.

 Breathing: Smooth muscles in the diaphragm and rib cage help us to

breathe.
• Digestion: Smooth muscles in the digestive system
help to move food through the digestive tract.

• Circulation: Smooth muscles in the blood vessels

help to circulate blood throughout the body.

• Heartbeat: Cardiac muscle is responsible for the

rhythmic contractions of the heart that pump blood
throughout the body.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF
MUSCLES FITNESS
EXERCISE

PATHFIT 1
MS. PAT BALICAS
Muscle fitness exercise is any type of activity that
makes your muscles work harder than usual. This
can include lifting weights, using resistance
bands, or doing bodyweight exercises such as
push-ups and sit-ups.
Muscle fitness exercise has many health
benefits, including
• Increased muscle strength and endurance. This can help you to perform
everyday activities more easily and reduce your risk of injuries.

• Stronger bones. Muscle fitness exercise helps to increase bone density,

which can reduce your risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

• Improved heart health. Muscle fitness exercise can help to lower blood
pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of heart disease
and stroke.

• Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. Muscle fitness exercise can help to

improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control.
• Weight management. Muscle fitness exercise can help you to burn calories
and build muscle, which can help you to lose weight or maintain a healthy
weight.

• Reduced risk of chronic diseases. Muscle fitness exercise has been shown
to reduce the risk of a number of chronic diseases, including cancer,
Alzheimer's disease, and depression.

• Improved mental health and mood. Muscle fitness exercise can help to
improve your mood, reduce stress, and boost your self-esteem.
Here are some examples of muscle fitness exercises:

 Weightlifting
 Resistance band exercises
 Bodyweight exercises, such as push-ups, sit-ups, and squats
 Yoga
 Tai chi
 Tai kwon do
 Karate
 Boxing
 Other sports, such as tennis, basketball, and soccer
Major Muscle Group
CHEST ARMS

BACK LEGS

SHOULDERS CORE
CHEST
The chest muscles are located on the
front of the chest and are responsible
for pushing movements, such as
pushing yourself away from a wall or
pushing a door open. The main chest
muscles are the pectoralis major and
the pectoralis minor.
BACK
The back muscles are located on the
back of the body and are responsible
for pulling movements, such as
rowing a boat or pulling yourself up on
a pull-up bar. The main back muscles
are the latissimus dorsi, the trapezius,
and the rhomboids.
SHOULDER
The shoulder muscles are located on
the shoulders and are responsible for
lifting and rotating the arms.
ARMS
The arm muscles are located in the upper
arms and are responsible for bending and
straightening the elbows. The main arm
muscles are the biceps brachii, the
triceps brachii, and the brachialis.
LEGS
The leg muscles are located in the
thighs and calves and are responsible
for walking, running, and jumping. The
main leg muscles are the quadriceps
femoris, the hamstrings, the
gastrocnemius, and the soleus.
CORE
The core muscles are located in the
abdomen and back and are
responsible for stabilizing the body.
The main core muscles are the rectus
abdominis, the transverse abdominis,
the obliques, and the erector spinae.
It is important to train all of the major muscle groups in
order to achieve a balanced and well-rounded fitness
routine. A balanced fitness routine will help you to improve
your strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall health.
