COPPER
•Chemical element
•It is a soft
•Malleable
•ductile metal with very
high thermal and Electrical
conductivity
• A freshly exposed surface of
pure copper has a pinkish-orange
color
HISTORY OFCOPPER
IT was one of the first metals ever extracted and used by humans, and
it has made vital contributions to sustaining and improving society since
the dawn of civilization.

 Copper was first used in coins and ornaments starting about 8000
B.C., and at about 5500 B.C.,

copper tools helped civilization

emerge from the Stone Age

Copper Isotopes
cu
Natural copper is a mixture of two stable
isotopes:
•copper-63 (69.15 percent)
•copper-65 (30.85 percent).
Main isotopes of copper are :

63
Cu Cu
64 65
Cu 67
Cu
Properties of copper isotopes
reddish in colour
Element properties
extremely ductile metal not
especially strong or hard.

It is an good conductor of

electricity and heat.

Copper occurs combined in many

minerals, such as chalcocite,
chalcopyrite, bornite, cuprite,
malachite, and azurite

The pure metal is second only to silver in thermal and electrical

conductivity.
Copper (ii) oxide
cuo
Copper(II) oxide belongs to the monoclinic
crystal system
 A black solid

Copper(II) oxide or cupric oxide is an inorganic

compound with the formula CuO
 it is one of the two stable oxides of copper
: Copper(II) compounds of commercial value
include cupric oxide (CuO), cupric chloride (CuCl2),
and cupric sulfate (CuSO4).
Properties of copper (ii) oxide
Cupric oxide is a black colour compound.
. It acts as a good corrosion resistance
Cupric oxide exists in powder (amorphous)
form.
Cupric oxide is insoluble in water
The melting point of cupric oxide is 1326
degrees celsius.
Cupric oxide is soluble in ammonium
chloride and potassium cyanide
Copper (i) oxide
cu2o
Copper(I) oxide or cuprous oxide is the inorganic
compound with the formula Cu2O.
 It is one of the principal oxides of copper
 the important industrial compounds of copper(I) are
cuprous oxide (Cu2O), cuprous chloride (Cu2Cl2), and
cuprous sulfide (Cu2S).
Properties of copper (i) oxide
Other names – Dicopper oxide, Red copper oxide, Cuprous oxide

Laminated finishes are not common for copper metals,
since most are opaque

 Clear polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) and

polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) coatings provide corrosion
and abrasion resistance and demonstrate long-time resistance
to degradation by sunlight.

Manufacturing of copper

Copper is sold in three main forms:

copper blister
cathode copper.

copper
concentrate
Copper cathode
The cathode is the basic product of copper
production.
A cathode – a 50 to 80 kg copper square
primary raw material input for the production
of copper rod for the wire and cable industry.
copper concentrates
copper concentrates contain 20–30% Cu and up
to 5% Zn.
Copper flotation tailings are activated with
copper sulfate and zinc minerals floated as
described above for Pb–Zn ores
Copper Concentrates are the raw material for all
copper smelters, which by processing it obtain an
impure form of metallic copper, anode or blister
copper
 which is later used to produce
 high purity refined copper
blister copper

metallic copper of a black blistered surface

being the product of converting copper
matte and being about 98.5 to 99.5 per cent
pure
It is called also Bessemer copper. It has 1%
impurity.
Available market Forms:

Copper Rod Copper Foil Copper Sheet

Copper Bar Copper Plate

Copper Wire
