URBAN TRANSPORTATION

 Urban Transportation was mostly

referred to as mass transportation.

 “Urban” which refers to an area with

dense population.

 It is ideal for a town or city with

highly dense population to have an
optimal mass transport system in
order to cater the demand of
movement of people, goods and
services with lesser negative impact
to the environment and energy
consumption.
URBAN TRANSPORTATION
MODES OF URBAN TRANSPORTATION

 PRIVATE VEHICLES

– owned by private individual for

everyday use.

 PUBLIC TRANSPORT
– owned by transport companies
or government fo mass transit
Public transportation in the Philippines

jeepney
 A mass transport commonly used as per
point to point long distance way of
travel but lesser than a bus.

 It is a vehicle originally made in the

Philippines after World War II.

 It can cater about 20 adult passengers.

Public transportation in the Philippines

taxi
 Is a standard vehicle for hire with a
driver. Methods of hiring and negotiating
services were significantly different
from country to country.

 It can cater for a maximum of 4

passengers.

 Of all land public transport, this one can

be expensive.
Public transportation in the Philippines

Tricycle
 Tricycle is an urban transport that can
be used in remote or small areas.

 In some cities, it is used for travelling

short distances just within the
downtown or city proper.

 It can be referred to as taxi in a small

scale that can carry about an average of
3 to 7 passengers.
Public transportation in the Philippines

Traysikad/padyak

 Padyak is similar to tricycle but man-

powered, quiet, and environmental
friendly.

 In can accommodate about 1 to 2

passengers depending on the capability
of the driver.
Public transportation in the Philippines

Habal-habal
 Habal-habal is literally a single motorcycle
that is attached with a wooden plank which
serves as an additional seat for extra
passengers.
 This type of transport is typical to remote
mountainous areas in the province

 Its safety is highly compromised since

motorcycle is intended only for 2 people.
Public transportation in the Philippines

bus
 Buses are common mass transit for larger
capacity and longer destination.

 Ideal for most buses to have a point to point

terminal in each designated towns for taking
in and dropping out passengers.

 This is intended for out of town route.

Public transportation in the Philippines

Metro rail transit

 This mass railway transit is only available in
parts of Luzon.

 Much quicker and faster that highway

transport.
 Fare is much cheaper than riding a bus or taxi

 It can cater a large volume of passengers

than a bus.

 It only stops on point to point station.

Public transportation in the Philippines

Passenger suv/van
 In some places, this type of vehicle is a
substitute to buses. More people prefer this
one since it is a lot faster and handy to travel
in longer distance.

 It can cater for about 9 to 12 adult

passengers

 The only issue on this transport vehicle was

the safety among its passengers since it has a
rising number of recorded accidents involving
this vehicle.
Public transportation in the Philippines

Airline passenger plane

 Passenger planes are more faster than
travelling by land and water

 More Expensive.

 Sometimes it suffers traffic congestion due to

the availability of landing slot.
Public transportation in the Philippines

Passenger ship/ferry/liner

 A Waterway transport can be a good mass

transit without considering time. Most parts
of Visayas region uses this mass transport.

 RORO can carry land vehicles and transport

them into the next island.
 Bangkas are pumpboats used for touring and
sightseeing.
 Passenger ships are the longest ferry
recommended for long distance travel.
Impacts of urban transportation

Traffic congestion

 Urban transportation may attracts traffic

congestion problem when not properly
planned or lack of transportation
management and policies.

 A transport system must have order and must

be regulated.

 If not, everyone will do as they please and it

results to lack of discipline and lawlessness.
Impacts of urban transportation

Air pollution

 Transportation is one of the most sources of

carbon emission in the world. Authorities are
now regulating the registered vehicles
according to its air quality emission.

 Furthermore, the government is encouraging

the people to use the public transport to
minimize the volume of vehicles instead of
using their own vehicle unnecessarily.
Impacts of urban transportation

noise pollution

 Transport authorities are trying their best to

reduce the effect of noise pollution made by
some vehicles specially motorcycles.

 The use of modified exhaust are now

prohibited in streets and blowing of horns
were limited in some institutional areas like
church, schools, etc.

 Unnecessary sound system are also prohibited

in some public transport.
Impacts of urban transportation

Excessive energy consumption

 Urban transportation varies according to the

number of population present in the metro

 Due to higher supply demands in urban

transport, volume of vehicles may flood the
highways will result to increase of energy
supply consumption such as oil or fuel.
Urban transport planning concept

 Urban transportation planning involves the

evaluation and selection of highway or
transit facilities to serve present and future
land uses.

 For example, the construction of a new

shopping center, airport, or convention
center will require additional transportation
services. Also, new residential development,
office space, and industrial parks will
generate additional traffic, requiring the
creation or expansion of roads and transit
services.
Urban transport planning concept

2 separate urban transport planning time horizons

 SHORT TERM (1 to 3 years period)
• Short term projects involve programs such as
traffic signal timing to improve flow, car and
van pooling to reduce congestion, park-and-
ride fringe parking lots to increase transit
ridership, and transit improvements.
Therefore, it focuses more on providing
traffic management.
 LONG TERM (Over 20 year period)
• Long term projects involve programs such as
adding new highway elements, additional bus
lines or freeway lanes, rapid transit systems
and extensions, or access roads to airports or
shopping malls. Therefore, it focuses on
providing transport facilities or
infrastructure.
