Brief History of Electricity
 Benjamin Franklin – Ameran Polymath
 In the mid-1700s
 Static Electricity
 Produced by friction
+ Positive
- Negative
What is Electricity?
 Electricity is a form of energy that can be easily changed to other forms.

Where does Electricity come from:

Mainly two sources:
1. Power Stations
- suppy a lot of electricity
- used in many electrical appliances
2. Electric Cells (batteries)
- supply a little electricity
- portable
- safe
How does on Electrical Appliance Work?
 To make an electrical appliance work, electricity must flow through it.
 The flow of electricity is called an electric current.
 The path along which the electric current moves is called the electric
circuit.
Electromotive Force (E.M.F)
 E.M.F refers to the amount of energy supplied by the electric source
(e.g battery) to each unit of electric charge.
 Work done to drive per unit charge across a circuit.

Formula:
E - electromotive force
E=
𝑊W- work done
𝑄
Q - charge
Potential Difference

 Work done to drive per unit charge across 2 points.

 It is the same as VOLTAGE.
What is a Switch?
 A Switch is a device which is designed to interrupt the current flow in a
circuit.
 In a simple words, a switch can make or break an electrical circuit.
 Every electrical and electronics application uses at least one switch to
perform ON and OFF operation of the device.
Types of Switches:
 MECHANICAL
- Mechanical Switches are physical switches, which must be activated physically, by
moving, pressing, releasing, or touching its contacts.
 ELECTRICAL
- Electronic Switches, on the other hand, do not require any physical contact in order
to control a circuit. These are activated by semiconductor action.
