Question :
Using Direct Stiffness method,
a-) Determine the element stiffness matrix of each truss member.
b-) Determine the Structure stiffness matrix
c-) Compute the reactions
Let EA/L as constant for all members.
2

ANSWER

 Calculation of angle of inclination θ

tg θ = = 4/3= 1,333 → θ = arc tg 1,333 = 53,13° → θ = 53,13°

 Bar length calculation

 Bar A
L=a=3m

• Bar B
We know that :

 Boundary conditions
 Node 1:
 Node 3:
3

 The forces
 Known forces :
 Unknown forces :

 The local stiffness matrix of the bar element

Note: in order to transform local coordinates into global coordinates, the previous matrix (2x2) must be expressed as a matrix (4x4).
4

 The global stiffness matrix of the bar element

[K]= [R^(-1) ][K'][R]
Note : all demonstrations of these matrices are in homework n°1.

C. Compute the reactions

The overall system is given by :

We get :

If we place the conditions at the supports and the values

of the forces, we will have :

We'll have a system of equations (6x6) and

we'll solve this equation :
