SPEECH

- A speech is a communication situation in which one


person (speaker) directly communicates to a group of
people who play a role of listeners through verbal or
nonverbal means.
Types of Speech

Speeches can be categorized into various types based on their purpose and content.
These types are;
1. Informative Speeches
2. Persuasive Speeches
3. Ceremonial/Extemporaneous speeches
4. Entertaining Speeches
5. Demonstrative Speeches
6. Motivational Speeches
7. Impromptu Speeches
Informative Speeches

Speeches which are made for purposes of giving information. They clarify options,
shape perception, empower others with information, etc

Types of Informative Speeches


1. Description - Describe the situation
2. Explanations - Inform about more abstract topics than descriptive, define the
subject in terms of critical features.
3. Briefing - Sort briefing presentation in an organization. They mainly use main
points, facts, figures,
Persuasive Speeches

Speeches made to convince others to give favourable attention to a certain point of


view. They usually have a specific view mind.
Types of Persuasive Speeches
1. Sequential - Persuade people by outlining the steps in a plan of action.
2. Refutative - Use by people in most cases when there is opposition to their
speeches that contend with opposition views.
3. Compare/Contrast - Contrast the weakness of an opposing arguments with
the strength of your own
4. Problem solution design- First convince the listeners that there is a problem,
then show how to deal with it.
Ceremonial Speeches
These are speeches which we make on the sharing of identities, values and re-affirm
our sense of community.
Kinds of Ceremonial Speeches
1. Tributes - Speeches, statements, act, gift that intended to show respect,
admiration honour to a person for their unique, superior contribution and
achievements, eg best student.
Kinds of Tributes
1. Eulogy- A speech of tribute presented upon a death of a person.
2. Toast- Brief words in praise of people by raising a glass.
3. Acceptance-Acknowledging an honour/award, let other people express
appreciation.
4. Introduction-Intended to introduce someone
5. Inspiration-Speeches intended to arouse feelings
Entertaining Speeches

- Also known as a humorous or after-dinner speech, the goal of an entertaining speech


is to amuse, engage, and captivate the audience.
-These speeches often include humor, anecdotes(short and funny story), and stories to
keep the audience entertained and uplifted.
Demonstrative Speeches

- Demonstrative speeches involve showing the audience how to do something or how


something works.
-They are often used to teach a skill, provide instructions, or explain a process.
-Visual aids, props, or live demonstrations are common in demonstrative speeches.
Motivational Speeches

- Motivational speeches are intended to inspire and motivate the audience to achieve
specific goals or to boost their morale.
-These speeches often incorporate personal stories, uplifting messages, and emotional
appeal..
Impromptu Speeches

- An impromptu speech is a type of speech that is delivered spontaneously and without


prior preparation. In an impromptu speech, the speaker is given a topic or a prompt on
the spot and is expected to quickly formulate and present their thoughts and ideas
about that topic.
- These speeches are typically brief and can occur in a variety of settings, such as public
speaking events, debates, classroom discussions, or even casual conversations.
Organization of Speeches

The organization of a speech is crucial for delivering a clear and effective message.
Speeches are typically structured using one of the following formats:

1. Introduction: The introduction serves to grab the audience's attention, establish


credibility, and present the thesis statement or main idea of the speech. It may also
include a preview of the main points to be covered.

2. Body: The body of the speech contains the main content and supporting points. These
points are organized logically and may be divided into sections or subtopics. Each point
is supported with evidence, examples, statistics, or anecdotes.

3.Transitions: Transition statements or phrases help connect one point to the next,
making the speech flow smoothly. Transitions guide the audience through the speech and
help them follow the speaker's line of thought.

4.Conclusion: The conclusion summarizes the key points, reiterates the thesis, and
leaves a lasting impression on the audience. It may also include a call to action or a final
thought that reinforces the main message.

5.Q&A (optional): In some cases, especially in informative or persuasive speeches,


the speaker may invite questions from the audience. This interactive session allows for
clarification and engagement.

6.Closing: A closing statement or gesture signals the end of the speech and often
involves expressing gratitude to the audience.
