Concept of Worship in
Islam
• The word “‫ ”عب د‬whose plural is “‫ ”عبي د‬in Arabic
language refers to slave. It is also defined as
opposite to freedom.
• The word “‫ ”عب ادة‬whose plural is “‫ ”عب ادات‬basically
refers to submission to all commandments of
Lord.
• These words are sometimes associated with
other words which helps to strengthen the
meaning of obedience for example:
‫عبد اهلل‬
‫عباد الرحمن‬
‫عباد اهلل‬

‫ِإَّن الَّلَه َر ِّبي َو َر ُّبُك ْم َفاْع ُبُد وُه َه َذ ا ِص َر اٌط ُمْس َتِق يٌم (آل‬
‫عمران ‪)51-‬‬
‫َقاَل ِإِّني َعْبُد الَّلِه آَتاِنَي اْلِكَتاَب َو َج َعَلِني َنِبًّيا (مريم ‪)30 -‬‬

‫الَّس ِم يُع اْلَبِص يُر (اإلسراء ‪)01 -‬‬
‫َو َم ا َخ َلْق ُت اْلِج َّن َو اِإْل ْنَس ِإاَّل ِلَيْع ُبُد وِن (الذاريات ‪)56 -‬‬
 “‫ ”عبد‬in Holy Hadith

‫ َأْش َه ُد َأْن اَل َه ُهلل َو ْح َد ُه َش َك ُه َو َحُم ًد َعْب ُد ُه‬: ‫"َمْن َقاَل‬
‫َأ‬
"،‫َو َر ُس وُلُه‬

There is no god but Allah, He is One and there is no associate

with Him, that Muhammad is his servant and His messenger.
 “‫ ”عبد‬in Holy Hadith
‫ َو َلْي َذاَك َأِلَح ٍد ِإاَّل‬، ‫ ِإَّن َأْم ُه ُك َّل ُه َخ ْيٌر‬، ‫َعَجًب ا َأِلْم ِر اْلُم ْؤ ِم ِن‬
‫َس‬ ‫َر‬
‫ا‬ ‫َأ‬ ‫ِإ‬ ، ‫ا‬ ‫ا‬ ، ‫ا‬ ‫ا‬ ‫َأ‬ ‫ِإ‬ ، ‫ِن‬ ‫ِم‬ ‫ِل‬
‫ْن َص َبْتُه َس َّر ُء َش َك َر َفَك َن َخ ْيًر َل ُه َو ْن َص َبْتُه‬ ‫ْلُم ْؤ‬
)2999 - ‫ َص َبَر َفَك اَن َخ ْيًر ا َلُه» (صحيح مسلم‬،‫َض َّر اُء‬
Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in
every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else
except in the case of a believer for if he has an occasion to
feel delight, he thanks (God), thus there is a good for him
in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation
(and endures it patiently), there is a good for him in it.

‫َو اْلَم ْغ ِر ِب َو َلِكَّن اْلِب َّر َمْن آَم َن ِبالَّل ِه َو اْلَيْو اآْل ِخ ِر‬
‫اْل اَل ِئَك ِة اْلِكَتاِب الَّنِبِّيي آَتى اْل اَل َعَلى ِّبِه‬

‫َو اْلُم وُف وَن ِبَعْه ِد ِه ْم ِإَذا َعاَه ُد وا َو الَّص اِبِر يَن ِفي‬
‫ي‬ ‫اْل ْأ اِء الَّض َّر اِء ِح ي اْل ْأِس ُأوَلِئ َك اَّل ِذ‬
‫َن‬ ‫َو َن َب‬ ‫َب َس َو‬
‫َص َد ُقوا َو ُأوَلِئَك ُه ُم اْلُم َّتُقوَن (‪)177‬‬
Piety is not to turn your faces to the east or the
west; rather, piety is [personified by] those who
have faith in Allah and the Last Day, the angels,
the Book, and the prophets, and who give their
wealth, for the love of Him, to relatives, orphans,
the needy, the traveler and the beggar, and for
[the freeing of] the slaves, and maintain the
prayer and give the zakāt, and those who fulfill
their covenants, when they pledge themselves, and
those who are patient in stress and distress, and in
the heat of battle. They are the ones who are true
[to their covenant], and it is they who are the God-
wary.
