Angles in a Polygon

Polygon
A plane shape with three or more straight sides is called a
Polygon
i.e. a triangle is a three-sided polygon
and a quadrilateral is a four-sided polygon

Triangle 3 sides Heptagon 7 sides

Quadrilaterals 4 sides Octagon 8 sides

Pentagon 5 sides Nonagon 9 sides

Hexagon 6 sides Decagon 10 sides

the name polygons relate to the number of sides they have.

• When all the side are equal it is called a regular polygon
Sum of the interior angles of a polygon
• Look at these 3 shapes

• In each case, the number of triangles is two less than the number of
sides. Thus, the sum of the angles of an
n – sides polygon
• Sum of the interior angles of n-side polygon
• The size of each angle in a regular polygon
Example:
1. Find the sum of interior angles of a pentagon, hexagon
and heptagon?
Example :

2. Find x ˚? 3. Find x ˚?
Example

1. Calculate the size of each regular octagon.

2. The sum of seven angles of a nonagon is . The other two angles are
equal to each other. Calculate the sizes of the other two angles.
