The class of 2028 learned the short vowel sounds for a and e, how to write uppercase and lowercase a and e, how to make connections to a text, and how to with numbers through ten and discuss more and fewer. Next week, we will learn the short vowel sounds for i (as in the word "it") and o (as in the word "odd"), and we will begin working with numbers through 20! Here are some ways to reinforce the skills we are working on: practice the wall cards every night, count to 100 with your scholar by 1s and by 10s, and read at least 3 books from the book baggy each night.
Music
The Class of 2027 began a new math unit on graphs. Scholars can now read data presented in a picture graph and create their own graphs. In Literacy, we focused on relationships between characters in our books. In Science, scholars started growing their own seeds at school. Additionally, scholars conducted experiments to learn more about stems and leaves. Next week, we will be conducting experiments on the roots of a plant.
This week in music, every grade has performed bass lines on the xylophone. The bass line is the foundation of the song. For Town Hall we will perform Bob Marley's Don't Worry About a Thing.

In literacy, scholars are learning about character traits. They are working hard to understand the difference between physical traits, character traits, and emotions. This weekend, as you read with your scholar, ask him or her about the characters traits (what the character is like as a person).

On a cold evening this week, Jose and Jayden went door-to-door with their mother to spread the word about the upcoming Alma del Mar lottery. They told many parents and children about the school and helped prospective families to complete applications. Jose and Jayden are determined to obtain at least 20 applications from prospective families!
On Saturday, Alma parents and staff members will go door-to-door to share information about Alma del Mar and to help families complete applications for the 2012-2013 lottery. We also invite scholars to join in uniform. Whether or not you have signed up, we would very much appreciate your help. Well be going out regardless of the weather. Questions? Please call Meredith Segal. Please meet us at one of the following locations on Saturday. 10:30 AM Brickenwood: Meet inside Dunkin Donuts (131 Nauset St by Building 19) 10:30 AM Presidential Heights: Meet inside Dunkin Donuts (131 Nauset St) 10:30 AM Blue Meadows: Meet inside McDonalds (179 Rockdale Ave) 12:00 PM Potter Street: Meet outside Christian Mission Church (267 Potter Street)
Uniform Checks
Ms. Resendes and Ms. Sparrow serve as paraprofessionals at Alma del Mar. They applied to the Journey into Teaching program, and both were accepted! Through this program, they will obtain their Bachelors degrees and teacher licensure in elementary education and moderate disabilities. Congratulations!
