Lab Session 03 INVERTER (NOT Gate)

OBJECTIVE
To Study the behavior of an Inverter Gate.

APPARATUS
Power Supply Resistors LEDs Jumper wires DIP switches Inverter Gate (7404)

THEORY: NOT Gate:

In digital logic, an inverter or NOT gate is a logic gate which implements logical negation. In logic and mathematics, negation or not is an operation on logical values, for example, the logical value of a proposition, that sends true to false and false to true.

INPUT A 0 1

OUTPUT X 1 0

The Internal Structure of NOT Gate is Shown Below.

PROCEDURE:
Construct the circuit as shown below. Now close the dip switch and power-on the voltage source. Observe the status of the LED. Now open the dip switch and apply ground state to the Input and observe the status of the LED.

SIMULATION RESULTS:

OBSERVATIONS:
We observed that the results are in accordance with the truth table, when we close the dip switch the LED turns off while it is luminescent when the switch is open. Hence we have the Truth Table as our Observation Table.

INPUT A 0 1

OUTPUT X 1 0

CONCLUSION:
We conclude that inverter or NOT gate has output that is in confirmation with the principle of NEGATION, i.e.: we will have high output on low input and vice versa.
