Lesson 2-1: Solving Systems of Equations with Two Variables

System of Equations: A set of two or more equations involving the same variables. Ex. Solving a system means finding the values of the variables, that will make all the equations true at the same time.
For instance, x = 2 & y = 4 is the solution to the system above!

Some systems have solutions and some don't...

independent: different lines, with different slopes. They cross at one point.
dependent: coinciding lines -they are actually the same line, so they share an infinite number of points.

Consistent Systems have solutions.

Inconsistent Systems have NO solutions.

They are parallel lines and never intersect!

In IM1, IM2 & IM3 we learned many ways to solve a system. Here are three methods (they will NOT be our focus today):
Solving by Graphing
(2, 4)

Solving by Substitution

Solving with Matrices

Our focus today (& next class) will be solving by the Elimination Method
Well organized and accurate work is critical to the success of this method. Pay close attention to the process:

Ex.

2x + 3y = -4

5x - 3y = 11

Ex.

5x + 2y = 340

3x - 4y = 360

When asked to solve a problem algebraically you may chose the elimination or substitution method, but the elimination method will be MOST useful to practice in preparation for next class!

Practice: pg. 71 # 11-13,15-19 odd, # 21-26 & 28

Be aware there are some decimal/fraction answers!

Notes from me about the take home... 1. You can no ask me a question from the test but... 2. No retakes but you can make corrections for 1/2 credit back on the ones incorrect (not including bonus). 3. Those corrections are due TEST DAY. 4. 4 point penalty if one class late. Only half credit given after one class late.
