Lesson 5-1: Angles & Degree Measurement

First some vocabulary: Angle - two rays that share a fixed endpoint Vertex - the fixed endpoint of the two rays forming the angle Initial side - the side of the angle that is fixed (stationary)

initial side

Terminal side - the side of the angle that rotates

The measure of an angle tells us the direction of rotation and the amount of rotation to move from the initial side to the terminal side. - counterclockwise rotation forms a positive angle - clockwise rotation forms a negative angle Standard position - an angle with its vertex at the origin and its initial side along the x-axis

Quadrantal angle - an angle is standard position with its terminal side on one of the axes.

Angle measures angles can be measured in degrees, minutes and seconds - one minute is 1/60 of a degree - one second is 1/60 of a minute (so 1/3600 of a degree) ex/ change 101.365 to degrees, minutes, seconds

ex/ change 73 16' 43" to degrees (nearest thousandth)

Coterminal angles - two angles in standard position that have the same terminal side

examples/ name one positive angle coterminal with 130 name one negative angle coterminal with 130 write an expression for all angles coterminal with 130

Reference angle - for an angle in standard position, it's the acute angle formed by the terminal side of the angle and the x-axis

examples/

Find the reference angle for: 120 " -135 "
