Lesson 4-2: Solving Quadratic Equations

Four methods...three you've used before, ONE new

Method #1 Factoring
Solve x 6x 16 = 0 by factoring.
2

Method #2 Graphing
Solve x 6x 16 = 0 by graphing.

So there can be real or imaginary roots? How do I know what to expect?

By looking at a graph OR by finding the value of the discriminant:

b2 - 4ac
If b2 - 4ac > 0
If b2 - 4ac = 0,

2 REAL ROOTS
1 REAL ROOT

If b2 - 4ac < 0,

0 REAL ROOTS
