Lesson 1.2 : Composition of Functions

Sometimes it will be convenient to combine two functions into one, new function.

Today we will focus on two different way to do this:

FIRST - we will learn to combine functions by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing them....

Operations with Functions

Sum: (f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x) Difference: (f - g)(x) = f(x) - g(x) Product: (f g)(x) = f(x) g(x) Quotient: (f/g)(x) = f(x)/g(x), where g(x) 0

Agosti 30, 2013

Ex. Given f(x) = 3x2 - 4 and g(x) = 4x + 5, find each function:

a)

(f + g)(x)

b) (f - g)(x)

c)

(fg)(x)

d)

(f/g)(x)
What do you know about variables in the denominator?

Composition of Functions
The composite function fg means the following:
(f g)(x) = f(g(x))

Ex. If f(x) = 2x2 - 3x + 8 and g(x) = 5x - 6, a) Find (gf)(3)

b)

Find (gf)(x)

Another Ex? f(x)=2x

a) Find (fg)(3)

g(x)= x+1

b) Find (gf)(3)

c) Find (ff)(3)

Iterations of Functions
An iteration is a process that keeps repeating itself...
Here's an example: Find the first three iterates of the function f(x) = 2x - 3 for an initial value of x0 = 1

Each output we found is an iterate.

FYI- The composition of a function and itself is called iteration. Ex. fff(1)
