COACHING PHILOSOPHY
EFFORT: Effort is central to everything I believe in. We will outwork our opponents. It will be clearly defined f for f the players as to what they are being asked to do. I will take the gray out of it. The linebackers will quickly learn that accountability and effort will be a huge part of their evaluations. evaluations I teach conceptually so our players always have concepts to rely on. My goals for the linebackers are for them to become students of the game game, think think the game game and ultimately play above their ability. Im constantly looking for ways to improve as a coach because I believe, there is only one way to coast and that is down hill.
3. Formation Identification 6. Communicate Adjustments j The list above are the building blocks that prepare players to align & execute their assignments assignments. 1. Alignment 2. Stance 3. Vision 4. Footwork (run fit to pass drop) 5. Defeat Blocks 6. TacklingTackling- CTB/ Drop your Weight
RELENTLESS EFFORT
I will preach, teach and demand effort in every aspect of football and in the classroom. The linebackers will set the effort bar for everyone in the country. This culture will lead to an increase in turnovers and a decrease in big plays. Loafs will not be an option! I will grade everything we do in practice, scrimmages & games. There will be effort sheets posted in the meeting room, grading each period of every practice. These sheets are direct feedback for the players and teach 100% accountability.
PERSONNEL
Our players will have a complete understanding of personnel. It is a must to know the offensive personnel before they break the huddle. I will teach the LBs to think the game by anticipating formations, plays & adjustments. Personnel P lB Breakdown kd 12 & 21 21 pers. = 2 backs 1 TE & 2 WR think I pro or I slot 12 pers. = 1 Back 2 TE & 2 WR think pro or slot pair We treat 12 & 21 the same. In 12 we consider the U the fullback (ex. 12 Ace Slot trips is same as Far I Slot in 21).
PERSONNEL
Personnel Breakdown 11 Pers. 11 Pers. = 1 back 1 TE & 3 WR Vs. 11 we are thinking in terms of doubles (2x2) or trips (3x1) & since there is a TE they can still form a slot slot. We always go into a game with a check vs. slot trips. Personnel Breakdown 10 Pers. 10 Pers. = 1 back 0 TE & 4 WR Vs. 10 we are thinking in terms of doubles (2x2) or trips (3x1) & since there is no TE they cant form a slot.
PERSONNEL
Personnel Breakdown 20 Pers. 20 Pers. = 2 back 0 TE & 3 WR A pro set is the only formation that can be formed. Any change of strength motion, same as, YY-TRADE.
PERSONNEL
Personnel Breakdown 22 Pers. 22 Pers. = 2 back 2 TE & 1 WR 22 pers is a separate entity. We treat the aligned formation as pro & any change of strength motion goes to slot. ***Important you identify who is the x and who is the z depending on the formation.
Formation Identification
Once y you know the p personnel y you can anticipate p formations by y process of elimination. 12/21 think pro or slot, anticipating pair adjustments vs. 12. 11 & 10 think doubles or trips with a possible slot adjust vs. 11. Fast accurate identification is very important because it gives the entire defense time to adjust. We usually go into a game with a number of automatic checks and adjustments based on formations Common checks include bunch formations. bunch, empty empty, end over slot slot, slot trips, slot double, mass shifts etc.

Alignment
W always We l say align li f for success. success. We W are so precise i in i our alignments because football is a game of inches. With that being said, a correct alignment g can spell p the difference in making gap play y or not. Our linebackers are on a string, if there is motion you will see them all moving on that string.

1. 2. 3.
EACH NUMBER REPRESENTS AN ALIGNMENT ON AN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN. THE NUMBERED TECHNIQUE CORRELATES TO YOUR GAP RESPONSIBILITY. LBS ADD A ZERO TO ANY TECHNIQUE TO DESCRIBE YOUR OFF ALIGNMENT
Stance
There is no one set stance. Everyone y is built a little differently y and the main thing is you need to be agile, mobile & comfortable. In a good stance your body should resemble a Z Z. Keys to a good stance: 1. balanced with your weight on the balls of your feet 2. 2 feet a little wider than shoulder width 3. flat back 4. bend in your knees 5 hands ready to 5. strike.
Vision
I teach my yp players y to expand p their vision. Players y will see what you ask them to see. If you tell them to read the triangle, thats what you will get. If you tell them to expand their vision and see it all, they will train their eyes to do so so. Our LBs LB s will be trained to feel all pullers, WR motions, and adjust their sight lines (vs. pairs, bunch, & offoff-set backs.) In pass coverage they will be taught that who they are relating to tells them where to take their eyes. Most breakdowns that occur during a play have to do with alignment, vision and footwork. If y your eyes y are in the right g p place y you have a great chance to succeed.
Footwork
I believe in the slide step step. Our term is cutting cutting grass grass. By taking initial slide steps we accomplish several things: - maintain our base - hold our depth - keeps you square to l.o.s. - positions us for our run fit - positions us for our pass drop
DEFEAT BLOCKS
LBs must learn do: 1. take vision to the blocker -if its a puller get up on puller turn corner 2. defeat the block 3. release and make play on the ball The biggest weapons LBs have are their Hat & Hands. We will drill this until it becomes second nature and our LBs LB s become unblockable. Well work drills on first level blocksblocks- stressing hathat -hands hands-hips hips-shed. On second level blocks stressing hat hathands stick stick & move move or if the blocker is high on our hip with his shoulders turned set him up and go underneath. We will get up on pullers, beat them to the spot, turn the corner run thru their ear hole & release to make the play.
TACKLING
Tackling teaching progression 1. Come to balance keep your feet hot 2. Drop your weight get your body in a tackling position 3. Always keep closing the distance between you and the ball 4. Keep your head up get head across vs. angle tackle 5. Club your arms/ Grab cloth 6. Roll your hips/ Hit on the rise to a point past the ball carrier 7 Accelerate your feet on contact 7. During the course of a day we dont get many one on one full tackles tackles. We try to see how many times our players can CTB CTB get in tackling position and tag off on the hip.
EFFORT- ITS WHO WE ARE BECOME CO AS STUDENT U O OF THE GAME: G MAJOR JO IN THE MINOR O THINGS (STANCE, ALIGNMENT, VISION, FOOTWORK, HAT & HANDS ETC.) RELENTLESS, RELENTLESS PHYSICAL, PHYSICAL PLAY WITH GREAT TECHNIQUE & REFUSE TO BE BLOCKED. DONT RIDE THE WAVE DEPTH CHART- YOU GUYS MAKE OUR DEPTH CHART (EVERTHING YOU DO IS EVALUATED AND GRADED (EFFORT, CHARACTER, LEADERSHIP, ABILITY TO PROCESS ETC) ) ACCOUNTABILITY- I WILL HOLD YOU TO A HIGHER DEGREE OF ACCOUNTABILITY THAN ANY OTHER LB GROUP IN BALL. OUR ROOM- WE WILL BE ONE. THERE ARE ONLY 3 LBS THAT CAN START A GAME BUT WE WILL ALL BE PREPARED AND SUPPORT OUR ROOM TO THE END. THERE WILL BE NO PERSONAL AGENDAS AND I WILL NOT BABY SIT. SIT AGAIN DONT RIDE THE WAVE BE CONSISTANT AND BE READY. EXAMPLE ALI HIGHSMITH.
