Standard #7: Planning for Instruction

The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous
learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-
disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the
community context.
Name of Artifact: Mathematics Lesson Plan for Kindergarten
Date: March 2014
Course: EDUC 255: Multicultural Education
Brief Description:
This lesson plan involves using a childrens book to teach a math lesson of
simple addition and subtraction. The selected childrens book is Five Little
Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow.
Rationale:
To document my understanding of InTASC Standards #7, Planning for
Instruction, I have selected to include my math lesson plan, because it shows how
one can utilize materials already present in the classroom to construct a successful
lesson plan. This lesson is a fun one for the students, because it is a popular, well-
liked book that also holds a lot of value for students who dont yet hold the schema
to solve simple addition and subtraction problems. By using knowledge of the
readers (they most likely already know the story line to this book), the teacher can
utilize that schema and build upon it to complete a successful math lesson.
