Standard #9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice

The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to

continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and
actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and
adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.
Name of Artifact: Exploration Day
Date: March 2014
Course: EDUC 255: Multicultural Education
Brief Description:
This assignment discussed whether or not Christopher Columbus Day
should be celebrated, in my personal opinion. Although Christopher Columbus is
a very important figure in our history, there are many other important people and
dates that arent celebrated or recognized as much as they should be. This was the
statement given to our class to guide our personal opinion.
Rationale:
To document my understanding of InTASC Standards #9, Professional
Learning and Ethical Practice, I have selected to include my assignment
exploration day, because it discusses the importance of knowing celebrated
holidays and individuals from different cultures, to recognize each learners
background and traditions. Each learner needs to feel important and equal to the
other students, and if a teacher only celebrates famous American holidays, some
students will most likely feel left out and unimportant in comparison to other
students. The teacher needs to recognize the importance of this practice, as it is a
need for many students.
