This course will focus on the design, construction and
maintenance of bioretention, gravel wetland, constructed
wetland and inltration type stormwater management BMPs.
Although promoted over the past 10 years by the NJDEP,
advanced stormwater management techniques still tend to
be incorrectly constructed, utilized improperly or inadequately
maintained. This has often led to basin failures or conditions
that compromise the functionality of these BMPs.
The material presented will review the design, construction
and maintenance fundamentals associated with these
techniques, with particular attention given to gravel wetland
and bioretention BMPs.
Instructors
Dr. Stephen Souza is the President of Princeton Hydro,
LLC. His academic training and professional experience
encompass three primary areas of expertise: aquatic resource
restoration and management, aquatic ecosystem sampling
and investigations, and stormwater quality modeling
and management. He has implemented a wide array of
nonpoint source and stormwater pollution control strategies,
including created wetlands, bioretention basins, inltration/
recharge systems, sandlters, riparian buers and other bio-
engineered green stormwater techniques. In addition, Dr.
Souza frequently provides expert testimony and technical
guidance regarding the ecosystem impacts of storm runo
and industrial discharges. He serves as the stormwater quality
management consultant for a number of municipalities and
regional resource conservation groups located throughout
New Jersey.
Geoffrey Goll, P.E., is the Vice President of Princeton Hydro,
LLC and a licensed professional engineer in a number
of states in the northeast. He has extensive experience
in geotechnical engineering, stormwater management,
hydrology, oodplain hydraulics, environmental assessments,
and environmental permitting. Mr. Goll has provided
engineering design services, testimony, and review of
stormwater management facilities for public and private
clients, and has provided guidance in the development of
watershed management plans and stormwater ordinance
development in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He is
well versed in stormwater runo theory and modeling, and
has well as extensive knowledge of soil inltration testing
and design methods, as is required by the Phase II Stormwater
Management Regulations.
