THE MANIFESTATION OF THE ORIENTALISM AND EXOTICISM IN THE PERIOD OF FIN DE
SICLE ON THE EXAMPLE OF PAGODAS BY DEBUSSY
SUMMARY: The concept of orientalism is a European invention and marks the other as
oposed to West-European discourse. It refers to critical attitude towards non-European civilizations
with the purpose of emphasizing the superiority of the West and setting boundaries between it
and East. Similar to orientalism is the idea of exoticism, which evokes the way of life, the other
culture in certain parameters of (musical) language for the sake of enriching the language.
For the coloristic purposes, Claude Debussy resorts to exoticism in the composition for piano
Pagodas, using the elements of Javanese, gamelan music, and the program title itself indicates to
Japonisme, in the fashion of the time after The Great Exhibition of 1889 in Paris.
The aim of this text is to point to the elements of exoticism in Debussys composition
Pagodas with the accent on incorporation of the other in his own impressionistic style. Therefore
it should be stressed that he didnt approach the other as a critic but he reconstructed and
transformed certain elements of Javanese into a unique Debussys music language.
KEY WORDS: orientalism, exoticism, the concept of the other, the Great Exhibition in Paris,
Claude Debussy, Pagodas, Japonisme, gamelan, colorism, impressionism.
