Introduction to Genetics
What is Heredity?
Our genes have the instructions for our specific traits, we have
thousands of genes. Heredity is when children get genes from their
parents, humans have sets of 23 chromosomes, and when married
the add to make 46 chromosomes, when parents have a child they
contribute with one complete set to the child, the only rule s that the
child must receive exactly one of each chromosome.
What is a trait?
A trait is a characteristic of each one of us, each of us has a different
trait and these traits are passed from generation to generation. Some
type of different traits is physical traits (hair color, eye color, and
height), behavioral traits, and predisposition to medical conditions.
What is DNA?
DNA gives instruction to the body to know their right purpose; it gives
instruction to the cells and tells the cell what role it will play in your
body. It also gives information necessary for a living organism to grow.
What is a gene?
Genes are instruction for our body to work; they are the directions for
building all the proteins that make our body function. Genes are made
of DNA and are essential for your body to give instructions.
What is a protein?
Proteins are the machines that make living things function; there are
millions and millions of cells in our body and every cell contain
thousands of different proteins and run together to make the cell
work.
What is a chromosome?
The DNA is packaged into compact units called chromosomes. The
DNA is wrapped around some proteins which then they form a
chromosome. Each human 46 chromosomes, the exact number differs
if you are a fish, human or a bird.
