Enzymes

What are Enzymes? And how they work?

Enzymes are globular proteins that act as biological catalyst.
They speed up chemical reactions that would otherwise occur very slowly at the
temperature between cells
Cystic Fibrosis sufferers have difficulty maintaining body mass.
They also have high basal metabolic rates
They require 120-140% of the recommended daily energy intake
A wide range of enzymes are produced by exocrine glands outside the gut.
Groups of pancreatic cells produce enzymes that help In the breakdown of proteins,
carbohydrates and lipids.
If a person has CF the pancreatic duct becomes blocked by sticky mocus, imparing the
release of digestive enzymes
The properties of enzymes are:
The generally work very rapidly.
They are not destroyed by the reactions wich they catalyse and can therefore be
recycled.
They can work in either direction
They are inactivated by high temperatures
They are sensitive to pH and usually work best in an optimal temperature range.
They are specific to specific reasons.
