SUMMARY
Armenians have settled in Eastern Europe long ago. Currently the Armenian communities in Eastern Europe include both traditional and modern Diasporas. By traditional Diaspora we mean primarily the Armenians
who appeared in Eastern Europe as a result the Armenian Genocide. Modern Diaspora consists of our compatriots who left Armenia in the post-Soviet period.
The Armenian communities in Eastern Europe were influenced by the
social and political environment of these countries. The period after the
World War II till middle of 20th century divides the history of both Eastern
Europe and Armenian communities there into separate stages.
In the pre-Soviet period the churches, Armenian traditional political
parties, national press and various Armenian cultural, educational, benevolent organizations carried out extensive activities in the Armenian communities of Eastern Europe. Their activities were of great importance for
self-organization of the Armenian communities and infused the community
life with liveliness.
In the Soviet period restrictions of the political liberties and anti-religiousness considerably affected the activity of not only the Armenian Apostolic Church, but also other institutions. Many organizations discontinued
their activities. For example, in that period there was only one officially
registered Armenian organization in Bulgaria the Yerevan Association
of the Armenian Educational and Cultural Organizations.
In the post-Soviet period the political freedoms and overcoming the antireligious atmosphere created favorable conditions for boosting the activities
of Armenian religious and secular organizations. Presently not only Armen182
ian churches, but also educational, cultural, sports, benevolent and other
organizations act freely. Armenian newspapers are published. The community life mainly consists of cultural events and national festivities.
The independence of Armenia and establishment of diplomatic relations
between the Republic of Armenia and Eastern European countries also contributed greatly to revival of the Armenian communities. The Armenian
embassies in these countries are important vehicles not only in development
of the interstate relations, but also for consolidation of Armeniancy, organizing and revitalizing the life of Armenian communities.
Currently two factors political and economic appear to be most important in the life of the Armenian communities of Eastern Europe. In the
political terms the circumstances are favorable. The available freedoms afford opportunities of extensive activities for the Armenian community organizations. As for the economic aspect, there is still some uncertainty in
the life of the communities. On the one hand, migration from Armenia to
the countries of Eastern Europe continues, on the other hand, Armenians
who had settled there move to Central and Western Europe and the USA
in search of more prosperous life.
We believe that the solution of problems that Armenian communities
of Eastern Europe face greatly depends on enrooting a new, Armenia-centered mentality among the Armenians.
